Sorry to resurrect a super old thread, but I wanted to clarify some of the back-and-forth around time stamps. For FOTR, the time stamps are fine as the audio cuts off when the screen goes black. But, for TT and ROTK, the earlier time stamps mentioned (not earlier in the thread, but earlier in the movie) don't take into account the audio (musical score). They simply call out when the screen goes black. The later time stamps take into account the audio. It's pretty clear Peter Jackson intended for there to be some black screen since the musical score continues. And splicing the two halves together with 1-2 seconds of black screen seems fine to me since the musical score continues and it honestly increases the drama of the cut. Did he do that because he knew it'd be on two discs? I have no idea, but it works.
