MKV Output File Skips And Freezes

Post by marcbkk »

Hi Nomad, Mike, and everyone. I just found this program today after installing a Blu Ray burner into my PC yesterday. What a great program. Thank you. I love the simplicity and the ability to create an MKV file so easily is great.

I have a copy of Baraka on Blu-Ray which I bought on Amazon. A great film if you never seen it. It also contains a bonus feature called "Baraka - A Closer Look", which is a 76 minute documentary on the making of Baraka.

I tried to create an MKV of that chapter today, I did it three times in fact, but the output is not right. The MKV process completes without error, but when I play the file it skips and there are some frames that are pixelated. The sound also does not follow correctly with the video. There are some frames though which look beautiful, but unfortunately the entire file is not right. It will also play on some machines a little bit and on other machines it doesn't play at all.

I am wondering if this is because of some file protection on the Blu-Ray itself perhaps that MakeMKV is having trouble to remove?

By the way, I am trying to make the MKV file directly from the original Blu-Ray and I didn't do a rip/backup of the 43GB Blu-Ray to my hard drive first. I don't think this should make a difference though.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I can perhaps try to make the MKV file come out correctly?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Cheers to all...

If you enable the debugging option, and post a log, we can see what the problems might be.

This time I ran it from the Blu-Ray files which were already on my hard drive so it didn't have to remove any copy protection or encryption.

I will run it again from the Blu-Ray directly so if there are any DRM issues perhaps it will show in the log.

Ok, I ran it again and this time directly from the Blu-Ray disc. The debug log is much similar though and nothing mentioned about any encryption or copyright protection on the disc:

Do you have "show AV sync issues" enabled in preferences? If no, please enable it, re-run, and post the error log again.

Thanks Mike. I ran it again with enabling "show AV sync issues" as you said. No, it wasn't enabled before, but it appears the result is the same except for some changes in the line of coded text. Here is the log entry:

Then it is safe to assume that the output file is valid, and you have playback issues. Firstly, please post mediainfo.sourceforge.net output for the file. The second thing to try is to remux entire file with mkvtoolnix. What player do you use? It might be a bitrate problem as well.

Thanks. I don't think I have player issues or bit-rate issues. I made a number of MKV rips using MakeMKV and none of the other files had problems. Just this one. I will post the medinfo output shortly. I tried two players on one computer, VLC and PowerDVD. Both played the file incorrectly. Then I tried the file on my LG home DVD player through my TV and it skipped even worse than on computer. Then I tried it on another computer with VLC and VLC simply crashed on the second computer.

I am not sure what exactly you want me to output from MediaInfo, but I went to the File menu and selected the option Export and it created an XML file which contained the following. Let me know if this is what you want or something else:

FWIW, you won't get interlaced VC-1 to work correctly in VLC, at least if you're using the software decoder. No idea about PowerDVD et al. though.

Hello Everyone. I know this post is already 4 years old, but it was never resolved and I eventually gave up trying to RIP the chapters I was having problems with on the Baraka movie Blu Ray.

I just however downloaded and installed the latest version of MakeMKV and tried it again and it made a perfect output copy this time. No problems. So issue resolved.

Perhaps it was some protection on the disc at the time that was preventing it from being able to be output properly. But now that 4 years has gone by, and the software has been updated quite a few times since then, perhaps those issues in the software have been resolved.

Anyway, I am very pleased.

Thanks again...
