Trying out makemkv beta 1.8.4 and having trouble with 3d

Post by xeddog »

I am very new to makemkv (like this morning) and I am running release 1.8.4 beta on a Ubuntu Linux 12.04 system. I installed makemkv using this http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5266 script, which seems to have worked as it should have. I have two blu-ray disks that I have been experimenting with, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1", and "The Hobbit and Unexpected Journey". For a blu-ray drive I am using a spankin' new LG Super Multi Blue BE14 (BE14NU40). It appears to be working properly although There isn't anything I can connect it to so the only proof I have is the box where it says 3D Playback right on the front.

When makemkv finishes reading the disk to obtain all of the source information, under the Video section it says "Mpeg4-MVC-3D", and I make sure there is a check in the box before begining the makemkv process. On the right side of the screen under track information>codec it says "Mpeg4 MVC 3D Extension". When I click makemkv, the program goes about it's merry way for about 45 minutes to an hour, but the output is a beautiful (although LARGE) 2D mkv file that plays on vlc and streams to my PopcornHour A210 via nfs.

So I guess my first question is - what is full frame 3d ( I think that is what it was called)? I ask because I read one thread that mentioned it and that the A210 PopcornHour can't play it. But it has played everything else I have thrown at it including SBS, OU, and anaglyph. It does much better than even my pc. But it does play the output of makemkv as 2D, as does vlc on my computer. I would have thought that 3D video would look "wonky" on a 2D display.

Thanks and sorry for what might be freshman questions,

Only Mede8er media players currently support MVC MKV

Please excuse me if I misunderstand your response, but I assume you are referring to playback of 3D. If I understand this correctly, makemkv is producing a 2d mkv file instead of a 3d. Here is some of the media info for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1:

Sometimes, mediainfo fails to recognize MVC stream in MKV file. Please try opening produced file with MakeMKV and see if it would recognize MVC 3D stream in MKV file.

You were right. Makemkv shows it as 3d. It looks like I need to a) find a way to make a SBS or OU, or B) find a player that will work with my tv).
