Rip Only Subtitles, No Video?

Post by lcbmd »

Hello--just joined so I can ask this question, but I've been lurking for a while. Thank you all for your help. I'm in the process of ripping my entire blu-ray collection and this forum has been invaluable.

Unfortunately, I have realized this morning that I unwisely stripped subtitles when ripping—I didn't realize that only .m4v format requires PGS subtitles to be burned in and that I could have just plopped them into a MKV and gone on my merry way. Furthermore, I didn't realize that I should always grab forced subtitle tracks, for when a movie has a line or two of foreign language dialogue with subtitles not burned into the video.

SO--I'm faced with the prospect of re-ripping my entire blu-ray collection AGAIN, which is not great as everyone here knows. My question is: is there a way to ignore the video portion of a title on MKV and rip JUST the subtitles track? And if MakeMKV can't do that, are there any programs that will? (I'm on a mac. I've heard tsmuxer, but I'm unclear if that actually rips from blu-ray discs).

Being able to do this would make the process exponentially faster and less annoying, so I'm very much hoping one of you smart smart people will know what to do.

You can't do that with MakeMKV.

Because the tracks are interwoven in the title, reading "just" one track will require about the same amount of time as the whole title with all tracks, in any case.

It might be more efficient to just use a source like 'opensubtitles dot org', et al, for missing subtitles? Typically available as .srt, which can be mux'd into video w/ mkvtoolnix.

You can open the largest m2ts which is usually the main movie in TSMuxer, select the PGS stream you want and demux it.
