~ the first file, theatrical version, completed but had several AV sync issues in stream errors. Because of this I did not try to play it yet. Second file, extended or special, failed. In this case a lot of Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR L-EC UNCORRECTAABLE or STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR. No idea. ~
AV Sync issues are usually nothing to be concerned about (unless they're HUGE).

When there are multiple editions of a title on the same disc utilizing seamless branching (where most segments are duplicated between the two playlists but some are unique), it's typical to see MakeMKV correcting small sync issues by dropping or adding frames, usually on the transitions from one segment to the next.

The UNCORRECTABLE MEDIUM ERRORS, on the other hand, indicate that the drive can't read 100% of the data from the disc. If the disc isn't damaged, you could try cleaning/polishing, but judging by other comments in this thread, I wouldn't be too optimistic.

Surely, if there are enough people returning these discs, they will have to do something about the problem eventually?

Thanks for the information regarding AV Sync. It didn't seem to be too bad and mostly in stream 5(?) but also had the Scsi errors mixed in. I'm not sure when one save vs the other failed but maybe I'll go ahead and watch it tonight. It wasn't as as my copy of The Witness. That spewed them non stop sadly.

Looking at the log file for the extended cut of the Abyss it appears it started to fail at the 2:14:14 marker.

I'm using the Asus BW-16D1HT and don't know the firmware version. Log file indicates SDF v098: ASUS_BW-16D1HT_3.02 so maybe 3.02?

I'm not sure what happened tonight, but i decided to give this another try on my Asus BW-16D1HT, and i was successful with the theatrical version with no faults. In the process of giving the special edition another go now.

Nothing was done different from previous attempts, and my discount had the scratch towards the outer edge that others seem to have issues with.

I've now had THREE copies of this disc with circular scratches that would not rip (the same files either skip or freeze on my standalone player). There have to be some serious and widespread QC issues with this one...

Has anyone tried contacting the publisher of this release to ask about this and whether they'll replace the 4K disc? Some manufacturers have done that, and I've had DVDs replaced in the past that way. It sounds like this release is published by Walt Disney Home Studios Entertainment? I wonder if that could be a route to get a good disc, rather than returning and buying another copy.

This page has contact information for Walt Disney, including a link to a form to send them an email:

I'm exchanging mine through Amazon. If the replacement has the same problem then I'll try contacting the publisher.

What's the process to replace just the UHD disc with Amazon? I thought you could only return or replace the whole package.

I got an alert that Target has The Abyss 4K back in stock (at $24.99 + shipping). I bought another copy from them, and I'll try to rip again when it arrives. This will be my 3rd attempt.

At least some of you are still having some luck ripping the disc. My drive:

Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-XD07U
Revision: 1.03

Still won't even decrypt it. I have downloaded sdf.bin and keydb.cfg (4/12/24) and still nothing. Disc is clean. Internet access enabled. Don't know what the heck to do next.

Return the disc for another copy?

I know the drive works as I am currently ripping multiple other 4K discs with it and it is working with them just fine.

Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-XD07U
Revision: 1.03
Serial number: xxxxxxxxxxx
Firmware date: 2020-08-20

Like I said, it's working with other 4K discs, just not this one.

Even tried this known good drive to no avail:

Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-XD08U
Revision: 1.00
Serial number: xxxxxxxxxxx
Firmware date: 2022-04-03

Disc is clean and clear with not a scratch or swirl mark on it.

I returned my scratched copy to Amazon about a week ago and just received a new copy from Wal-Mart. The internal packaging is different (4K disc isn't stacked on top of the bonus features disc). MakeMKV also reports that the "volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted." It appears as MKB20_v77_THE_ABYSS_1436.tgz. I've submitted the new dump file by email to svq@makemkv.com.
