Blu-ray rips not playing well on WDTV..any one know why?

Cross-posting this thread into the linux forum based on setarip_old's suggestion since I'm doing everything in linux (Mandriva 2010.0):
Orig thread: http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic ... 77&start=0

HI.

I have two blu-ray rips, Transformers 2 and Half-blood Prince. Both ripped with MakeMKV 1.4.11. Neither one plays well on the wdtv. They start off OK, but then the video gets choppy, and the audio drops out. Specs are below. All my HD-DVD rips play fine (created with dumphd & eac3to).

I am running b-rad 0.5.8.1 on the WDTV.

I am trying to figure out if this is a makemkv issue with the MKV creation, or a problem/limitation of the WDTV. I also tried running the MKV thru tsmuxer, and the resulting M2TS did not play at all on the WDTV.

One further note on Half-Blood Prince: Funny thing I noticed about Half-Blood prince this morning: It played well from about the time Harry met Professor Slughorn (possibly earlier, I was in and out of the room until then) all the way up to the point where the camera moved thru the windows and into the Weasley twins store. Right where the camera moves thru the window some fireworks start inside the store, and then it got choppy and I lost sound.

Any help or ideas are appreciated?

Thanks,
John

p.s. I am also going to try plugging a USB HD directly into my WDTV (hopefully tonite), and see if my network is the problem, even tho it has not been an issue with all my non-BR rips, including HD-DVD 1080p movies.

Hello,

I am currently having this exact issue, I have been in contact with WD and they I have sent them the mediainfo for the movies that have caused me issues. I have noticed that you can workaround the issue by switching audio tracks and then switching back to the original. The problem goes away but returns after about an hour.

I've been told it's a combination of the bitrate and network thruput, as all these blu-ray rips play just fine when attached locally, playing from a ext3 USB hard drive.

I am currently using handbrake to convert the Half-Blood Prince makemkv MKV to a CQ=18 MKV with 4 reframes. That should be done either tonite or tomorrow morning. I'll check out the actual mediainfo, and then play it over NFS and see how it plays and how it looks.

p.s. You likely aren't going to get any help from WD if you're using a WDTV (non-Live) and networking. I've also noticed on Half-Blood that it plays fine for a while then has the stuttering/sound-gone problem again once there is more action on the screen.

Sorry, I forgot to mention mine was a WDTV-Live. I have given up for now on the stutter and moved back to XBMC. However, if I get any info from wd i will pass it along.

For the record, here is my output cat /etc/mtab for the NFS mount:
192.168.100.5:/home/john/Download/DVDRips /tmp/media/usb/Rips nfs rw,v3,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,hard,lock,proto=tcp,addr=192.168.100.5 0 0

Default is UDP. Neither plays Potter or Trans2. 32768 is max as well.

However, x264-ing via Handbrake does work. I am using a CQ of 18. I don't know my bitrate yet since it's still encoding, but it does play with no apparent problems.

So it looks like I'll need to run all my mkvs from makemkv thru handbrake, and then finally thru mkvmerge to add titles and JPG attachments.

Yes you pretty much have to rencode it with Handbrake if you want to play it on WDTV live via network which I do.
