Wont Rip BluRays OS X 10.12.3 MakeMKV all versions

Post by Nowhereman1223 »

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro 13" w/16GB Ram/512 GB SSD/OS X 10.12.3 and have used both a pioneer bdr-xdo5s and now a LG-be16nu50.

Used all available MAkeMKV versions to no avail.

I either get lockup of software and drive or random scsi or posix "Uncorrectable Errors" that have all translated to a failing drive or disc. As I have used multiple discs and now a brand new drive (lg) I don't know what to do.

This all seemed to happen shortly after I purchased the software (I am sure it is a coincidence but still frustrating).

I have ripped hundreds of movies using this software and for it to start failing shortly after purchase is truly annoying. Not to mention I can't add my new movies to my collection.

Please Help

Because MakeMKV has to talk directly to the drive to deal with the key exchange (DVD can be done via brute force if necessary), you MAY have to run it with a higher privilege level. Does the user you are logged in as have direct access to the drive, or only through the operating system?

I have full privileges on the ID.

When it starts ripping it does say using Dirext OS Access mode

It is just crazy as it worked amazingly until a couple weeks ago when it failed on the Terminator BluRay. I returned 3 of those thinking the discs were bad. Then bought a new drive thinking it had failed.

Now using a different drive and different BluRay i get the same 1/8 rip and the freezes as time remaining skyrockets and then full lockup.

Do the errors start early in the rip, or after it has started ripping the longer titles? Honestly, copying the debug log into your message would help a lot in trying to track this down...

It cruises through reducing time remaining to 30 minutes and then at 2309.5M it slows to a crawl and then fails shortly thereafter

BluRay is Fight Club 10th Anniversary but the same issues happened on 3 different Terminator Discs as well.

Here is the latest log

With the Pioneer USB-powered drive you listed, such errors are common when there is insufficient power to the drive to operate at high speed. And MakeMKV can make a drive hit high speed fairly regularly. This is why they should always be plugged into a "fully powered" USB port, rather than a hub. And laptops should always be plugged in so that they can fully power their USB ports.

But that should not be the case with the LG external, since it has its own power supply. It should not be disconnecting from the computer, as your log clearly shows:
Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00349.m2ts' at offset '2798518272'
Error 'Posix error - Input/output error' occurred while reading '/dev/rdisk2' at offset '2798518272'
If you try ripping the disk multiple times, do the IO errors occur at the same offset, or does it move around?

On the LG drive, it's default "quiet mode" slows the drive down. I'm not sure if you can disable that on the Mac without running a virtual Windows machine to run the LG utility. But, again, it should not have the power-induced errors.

The errors occur at about the same interval.

And I figured that was the issue with the pioneer drive which is why I bought the LG.

I do have a virtual machine to us for the lg utility.

I tried a 4th copy of terminator on bluray (another exchange since the others failed) and this time it worked, however fight club is still a no-go.

I'll try turning off the quiet mode and have another go at it now

I tried Fight Club again, and i noticed that when trying to Rip this BluRay it doesn't ask to create the folder for output like with all other movies.

So I created a Fight Club folder under the output options and ran it again.

This time it made it to about 80% or 27720M before slowing down and eventually failing.

here is the log for this attempt.

I'm having the same issue. Did you have any luck with this?

Uncorrectable read errors and hardware time-outs are not something MakeMKV has control over. It is simply passing through the information it got from the operating system and the drive.

The reasons for this (assuming you aren't using a USB-powered drive) come down to a dirty/scratched disk (most likely cause), a poorly-manufactured disk, a disk with obfuscation that has some titles referring to unreadable areas of the disk, or a defective drive.

USB-powered drives have the added possibility that the read rate gets too high for the power available.

If there were a key exchange issue (something MakeMKV has some control over), the read would fail almost immediately, and the key exchange would be singled out as the cause.

You can increase the number of retries in MakeMKV (Preferences->IO), which can sometimes help, but I doubt that it will in this specific case.
