"Smart" TVs are not very smart. Subtitles confuse them, for the most part.

I have not found any "smart" TV that can play DVD or Bluray subtitles in either MKV or MP4 files. Some can play text-based subtitles from MP4s, but that involves downloading .SRT files and putting them with the MP4 file for playback.

In most cases, reliable display of subtitles requires an external media player, which understands more formats than the "smart" TV.
