Unknown volum key

Hi. I'm using MakeMKV 1.10.7 on MacOS 10.12.6.

Using an external DVD/BD player I have been able to rip a DVD (Blade Runner, Final Cut), but unable to rip any BD I have got some of them to play on VLC. So the drive works. It also appears under "storage" in the about menu.

MakeMKV does not find the external driver, but by "open files" I managed to rip the DVD. Doing the same with BD just tells me "The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted". I have tried a couple of different BD, but same error on all of them.

Are you copying the disks to your hard drive, or are they still on the optical media?

MakeMKV is asking for a list of optical drives, and is being told there are none. When it finds where the disk is, it does not know where the disk information that tells it which key to use is located. So it has to fall back to being told what the volume key is.

Try this - do NOT insert the disk in the drive until after MakeMKV starts, to see if it finds the optical drive. It may be that the operating system is mounting the disk. It's not supposed to, but weirder things can happen.

The system recognizes the optical drive ( > about > storage), but MakeMKV still can't find it. Finder won't show the empty drive though.

I'm still on the optical media, I have tried opening all the files MakeMKV allows me to open (BDMV, *.inf)

MakeMKV gets its list of optical drives from the operating system. Hopefully someone with MacOS experience can chime in here with why MacOS would not report an optical drive.

Does MakeMKV give the same error if you insert a DVD instead of a BD in the drive? If not, I would think something is "mounting" the BD for you, so the optical drive isn't treated as one.

MakeMKV won't recognize the optical drive even with a DVD inside, the very DVD I ripped earlier today. I still had to "open files" and select the "VIDEO_TS.IFO" file to open and rip the DVD. Which did work, I have opened and played back the MKV file. But now I get a "failed to open disc" error on the DVD.

Then, when was the last time you reset your Mac? And is MakeMKV running with administrative privileges, so that it can talk directly to the hardware?

Decrypting DVDs is not as complex as BDs, from what I've been reading. Everything you need to do so can be included in an ISO of the DVD; it is in the data the computer sees. There is region locking, which the drive enforces, but if the drive allows you to read the data, that isn't a big issue.

Not so with a BD; there are parts of the "generic" decryption process that require access to the physical disk, OR possession of the "volume key" that the physical access allows. An ISO or mounted file system doesn't allow access to that exchange of disk data, which is why MakeMKV can't discover the volume key on its own.

Maybe its the optical drive. I tried the same drive with an old windows laptop, running as admin, with MakeMKV 1.10.7. The drive appears in "My Computer" but not in MakeMKV.
