Every time I try to backup my copy using version 1.12.2 it times out or fails. Is there some setting or something I need to enable? I haven't had this much trouble with any of my other discs.

Sorcerer's Apprentice doesn't come up here as a "hard to rip" disk... are there any error messages that come up when you rip it?

MakeMKV simply seems to hang. I get the spinning circle that and a message that says the program has stopped responding. I hadn't seen that before.

No output at all usually means it's hung up waiting for the operating system to respond to a query.

Are there any device errors logged by the operating system? How long do you "let it spin" before you force it to stop?

Good question, I typically notice it and let it go for about 20 min. I think I will give it a shot tomorrow and see if I can get more specific info to share.

Have you tried cleaning the disc first? Sometimes even a brand new disc out of the case can not be clean enough. I am now cleaning every new disc I get with disc cleaner and a microfiber cloth and have not had any failures. Just an idea.

Us a solution of 50/50 distilled water and rubbing alcohol along with a microfiber cloth.
I also use a microfiber cloth for cleaning my glasses and it works great.
