Many years ago, I used to use DVDFab software for backing up BluRay discs.
Once I started using MakeMKV, DVDFab became reduandant. I never had to
go back to it. Any issue in backing up usually arose because of a dirty disc.
I never had a problem playing the film using backed up files. I use
PowerDVD for watching films; somehow VLC didn't work.
Yesterday, for the first time, I encountered an issue in playing the film,
after MakeMKV had finished backing up, apparently with success.
Film: Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022 Lionsgate)
When I tried playing the film, I get the error message:
"Mismatch between disc and player region codes. See disc packaging for details."
The message is on a blue screen, with Lionsgate logo. I find it a bit puzzling.
Region-code mismatch usually happens at the ripping/back-up stage. The
message makes no sense while playing already-backed-up files.
So, after all these years, I had to go back to DVDFab! It backed up the film fine.
Further remark: I don't always check after backing up a disc whether it can be
played; I just assumed the film files would play. Now I wonder whether I
should check all my earlier backups!
Have problem playing backed up movie
Re: Have problem playing backed up movie
Maybe your VLC doesn't work because it needs Java 1.8 for many BluRays. Then again it should still work, but only playing back the main movie itself.
MakeMKV only removes AACS, no BD+, no Region Lock or other BDJ-features.

Mismatch between disc and player region codes -- again
I have had two more instances of this error, while backing up BluRay discs.
I had reported the problem earlier, with:
Everything Everywhere All aat Once (2022) Lionsgate
The problem resurfaced with:
The Whale (2022)
which is also a Lionsgate release.
For a while, I thought the issue might be with some newer protection implemented by Lionsgate.
But then, I had the same issue with
Triangle of Sadness (2022)
which is a Criterion release. They aren't know to include any copy-protection.
In all three cases, DVDFab came through.
All the problems I have had were while using version 1.17.4, which is supposed to expire tomorrow.
I use the 64-bit version with Windows 11 Pro.

Re: Have problem playing backed up movie
VLC defaults to being set to region B, if you are in another region you’ll want to change that: http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=132677
Region coding is not stripped away on Blu-rays during ripping like it is with DVDs as they work very differently.
