I don't really know where to put this because the issue is an error report, but is not related to a specific media type, and the drive itself is completely functional including for UHD.

The issue seems to be that this drive cannot complete the key exchange for any media types, but only over iSCSI and only this drive (two others are fine), and I don't seem to be able to flash it to the recommended firmware for UHD from linux either (I haven't tried Win11 SDFTool Flasher 1.3.5 yet, I'd have to yank the drive and put it into a windows machine afaik)

Anyway, I think this is a bug in which / how SCSI commands are sent to this particular drive and I'm wondering if there is a workaround or if this is something a fix may exist for.

Apologies in advance for tersity and/or tone of the info dump below, I certainly don't intend anything untoward. Hopefully, I've also not completely missed something already asked and answered, as I've done a fair amount of searching and reading and this particular case doesn't seem to have come up before.

Drives:
  1. BD-RE ASUS BW-16D1HT (works) /dev/sr1 => /dev/sg4
  2. BD-RE PIONEER BD-RW BDR-S13U 1.03 (works) /dev/sr0 => /dev/sg1
  3. BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH16NS40 1.05 (drive at issue) /dev/sr2 => /dev/sg8

Standard MS iSCSI initiator, picks up all targets.

Context:
  • LG Drive (drive 3) has region code set to 1 (no idea when this happened, this drive is ancient)
  • ASUS (drive 1) and LG (drive 3) are both flashed for LibreDrive, and that is verified to work on multiple UHDs w/o iSCSI, but I don't know if that is related because I hadn't configured iSCSI before the flash. Pioneer is a no-flash-required drive.
  • All disks fail on LG drive (drive 3) (have not tried to burn my own w/o CP, but can) (see code block 1 below)
  • All disks open and rip correctly under identical iSCSI circumstances on different drives (drives 1 & 2)
  • All disks open and rip correctly using makemkvcon on the machine the drives are installed in and on all drives (see code block 2 below, though I don't see anything useful)

  • Remote LG Read of disk 4 fails with error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION' occurred while reading '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_06_1.VOB' at offset '4096' (see code block 6 below)
  • Remote LG Read of disk 4 with remote makemkv still running and with the disk opened (ala code block 4) SUCCEEDS AFTER LOCAL LG READ OF THE SAME DISK
  • Remote LG Open of Razor with remote makemkv still running doesn't succeed like the DVD does, but the disk cannot be opened to get to the right place. (code block 7)
  • SDF Tool works only sometimes (code block 8 / 9)

The recommended firmware for WH16NS40 drives is WH16NS60 1.02MK.

Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide

I have no idea if it will fix the issues you're having, but getting the drive to the recommended firmware seems like the problem to try to solve first.

Thanks dcoke, I was afraid this might have to be my next step.

I pulled the drive and flashed it to 16NS60 1.02MK and verified that it can read DVDs, BDs, and UHD, without errors like the RPC and key/ex errors. But... This is now local to another machine through a UASP adapter, so I'll need to be able to reboot the original machine, which is running an uninterruptible batch job and will be for a few weeks still, before I can actually test (unless someone knows how to retrain, w/o rebooting, Linux to read the new firmware of the drive instead of sending every process that interacts with it into D+/Ds forever). My second child was also born since I posted that first thing, so I'm a little preoccupied.

I have no idea if it will fix the issues you're having, but getting the drive to the recommended firmware seems like the problem to try to solve first.
Actually, scratch that reboot query in my last, and turns out you were right and this is exactly what was required... It occurred to me that the only thing I actually needed to do was plug the drive back into the machine through the UASP connector to get it into a testable state w/o rebooting. Opens/Reads/Rips over iSCSI now, go figure, I guess 1.05 is buggy as hell over iSCSI. All the more reason to flash to recommended.

Guess this can serve as a guide for anyone else who runs into this.
