Pioneer BDR-208D

I thought it was only me, but after doing a Google search I found out that many people are experiencing slowness in the rip in these drives.

The thing is dvdfab rips the blurays at full speed and makemkv doesn't. It maxes out at 2x.

After doing more checkups and research there is no riplock on the drive. The latest firmware is 1.10. No updates yet.

Any ideas or updates?

FYI: I have an iMac 27 inch late 2012, 10.8.3, 3.4 GHZ i7, 8 GB of ram, 1TB fusion drive and the nVidia GeForce GTX 680mx with 2GB of gram.

I also have a Pioneer BDR-208DBK. Read rate in latest version of MakeMKV tops out at 2.0x.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB of RAM, and an Intel i7.

Until I can see higher read speeds, I won't be buying the full version - as I would rather pay for DVDFab/AnyDVD and actually get read speeds that my drive is capable of.

A few people mentioned that if you open AnyDVD, then MakeMKV, then close AnyDVD the read speed improves. Does this mean those people have paid for both bits of software?

I'm experiencing the exact same problems. Anyone have a solution to this? I'm running MakeMKV 1.8.4 on Ubuntu 12.04

I had assumed the maximum read/RIP rate was determined by the drive and/or the disc encoding. I have Pioneer 2 BDR-206 (v1.56) based drives, 1 Pioneer BDR-208D (v1.10) based drive, and an LG WH14NS40 (v1.00) drive. All of the Pioneer drives have max rates in the range you indicated while the LG can reach rates as high as 3.8x-3.9x for a few discs but normally tops out in the 2.5-3.3x range with a small number of discs reading/RIPing at the same rate no matter which drive I use with my Mac.

Pioneer drives are rip-locked at 2X. Even installing Windows will top out at 2X. Nothing you can do, as Pioneer themselves set the lock on the drive. I gave up on Pioneer and went back to LG, which has fantastic rip speeds. Older LG drives can be unlocked to read even faster.

Get an LG 16X BH16NS40. It rips at 8X for dual layer and 12X for single player blu-rays. That's around 30MB/s dual and 45MB/s single. It's fast. I bought one about a month ago because the Pioneer was literally wasting my time. Not only is ripping faster, but installing Windows and programs from disc is faster as it's not rip-locked at 2X. It took 8 minutes to install Windows 8 compared to 40 minutes on Pioneer.

I had a Pioneer BDR-206 and had the same problem. Ripping a disc would take around an hour and a half. The LG takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Thanks for all the tips, I wish I had done better research before buying my drive!

Last night I ripped "Star Trek: Into Darkness" at 2x but today I was able to rip "Epic" at 4x. Both disks were dual layer Blu Rays. Any idea why two different disks would rip at two different speeds?

I think I probably will pick up an LG, thanks for the tip.

Sometimes it may hit 4X, but is usually at 2X MAX. It's frustrating. Just get a newer LG drive, you won't be sorry.

agreed had pioneer 208dbk, avg was 2x, at times maybe 4x. did some research, got the lg wh14ns40, no riplock out of the box, don't have to worry about flashin a modified firmware. avg rip is 6-8x, done in almost half the time of the pioneer.

I just bought a brand new Pioneer BDR-208DBK (1.10) which I'm running in a Mac. I was worried when I read this that I'd made a mistake but after backing up my first disc I'm seeing a solid ~7x backup.
