usb to sata adapters?

Anyone know of any usb to sata adapters (externally provided power most likely) that work with desktop optical drives? I got a cheap one from ebay that has a 12v input and it works with my desktop sata hard disks (so its not a loss, and for under $1 after ebay coupon was willing to risk it), but doe...

Better way to use ddrescue? (or how do BluRays do error correction?)

I'm wondering if I'm using ddrescue in a manner that is optimal in regards to the error correcting codes on a bluray. namely: do blurays error detect/correct codes on a 2048 byte block boundary or is it larger. i.e. I use ddrescue -b 2048 -d to read the discs in a direct io manner, and even with dif...

Re: Keep Orginal MKVs or Recompressed?

In the US, you can get an 8TB external drive regularly for $130-$140ish (not every day, but regularly). Lets say its 50GB (this is very conservative, probably on average in the 30-40GB range) for a movie, that's about 160 movies you can fit on a single drive. so each movies basically costs less than...

ok, that's what i was interested in.

Is the higher bit density only for UHD discs?

Hardwre difference between BDXL and UHD Drives?

So obviously there's a difference, as not all BDXL drives can read UHD discs, I've just done a lot of googling and see people asking this Q but never getting a technical answer as to what is the difference. i.e. a regular 1080p bluray video disc is just a regular Bluray in terms of bits on disc with...

Re: HD-DVD - 1080p false advertising?

depends on how static the image is. There's reason ABC/ESPN decided to go with 720p for sports insted of 1080i. For constantly changing scenes, 720p is a constant 720 lines of vertical resolution, while for fast moving things 1080i will devolve to 540 of vertical resolution https://www.reddit.com/r/...

Re: libredrive bypass bus encryption?

this is very useful for trying to recover broken discs (where one might use multiple copies to fill in the blanks). Is it possible for you to add a command line option to makemkvcon to basically say ("insert libredrive, but don't do anything else) so I can then just use ddrescue. i.e. today for DVDs...

libredrive bypass bus encryption?

Not that it matters in the context of MakeMKV, but for discs I have that are scratched and unable to be fully read easily, bypassing bus encryption would be useful for making ddrescue images of them especially if one tries to read different portions on different machines.

Re: Backup to Blu-ray ISO files

There's really minimal point to MakeMKV attempting to make an ISO, at least for any BD-J disk, as it does nothing to protections that might exist with in the bd-j code. More often than not with BD-J, you'll end up with an ISO that is not playable. Even for non BD-J discs, it wont remove region code ...

Re: makemkv doesn't record VUKs for discs opened

the only thing that's drive dependent is if the disk wants bus encryption. But the VUK from one drive should open the disc on any other drive its inserted into (assuming bus encryption is taken care of)

makemkv doesn't record VUKs for discs opened

At least from my experience (perhaps I did something wrong), but MakeMKV doesn't record the VUKs for discs that it has previously opened. so if I have 2 broken discs that I can make a good image out of (via ddrescue), I can't just open the broken disc once in makemkv then create a good ISO out of th...

makemkv info and bus encryption?

does makemkv in the info screen show if a disc requires bus encryption? I know it shows the flags for the drive, but wondering about the flags on the disc. I don't see it, but that could be because the discs I've been testing with don't require bus encryption.

Re: broken MOD DVD

using linux. made the disk image with ddrescue (about 19MB chunk near the start is not readable), for whatever reason when mounting it has a corrupted file system, where makemkv and mpc-hc aren't impacted by this, but vlc crashes because of it. tried mounting as both udf and iso9660

broken MOD DVD

So I have a Manufacturered on Demand DVD that is broken, it crashes many of the pieces of software when I try to use it as a DVD. thankfully, makemkv is not one of them and I'm able to make MKVs of all the episodes without a problem. Similarly, mpc-hc seems to be able to play it as a DVD just fine (...
