After doing a little more digging I found that I was using the makemkv command instead of the makemkvcon. When I used the second it seems to work.

Can't get Makemkv to run on Ubuntu 18.04 server
I am on a fresh install of ubuntu 18.04 server. I installed makemkv via the forum documentation and then also tried using a third part repo. Each time when I tried to run the makemkv command I got the following error: makemkv: cannot connect to X server I also tried to do a fresh install of ubuntu 1...
