Re: How do you turn on embedded subtitles?

MakeMKV will normally rip the subtitle tracks and put them into the MKV file automatically.

If you're asking about rendering them onto the video track, that would require something like Handbrake.

The scent of the Pledge doesn't matter, unless you use the DVDs near a nest of bees.... ;) Most versions of Pledge (and "store brand" furniture polishes) are fine. It's just a water-soluble wax. I've used it for cleaning helmet visors, aircraft and motorcycle windshields, and, occasionally, wood fur...

Re: site down (hacked?), and spam

There is a published contact address for the domain on Yandex.ru, but I won't post it here (don't want it to be flooded with spam, after all! ;) ).

The outage for DNS may have just been my portion of the virtual world; I eventually found a DNS server that could resolve the address.

Re: If you had to choose

I voted for subtitle conversion, but that is more influenced by the fact that most of what I encode HAS subtitles, and I dislike the fact that I have to burn PGS subtitles in when I convert to MP4s right now. I so much prefer having the option to chose languages... The audio is not a big issue for me.

Re: site down (hacked?), and spam

Right now, there seems to be a problem with the cool-dns.com DNS servers... This site is up, but I could only reach it by plugging the IP into my hosts file...

Re: No preview in MKV-files (Bluray)

When you run the files through Handbrake, have it create MP4 files, rather than MKV. And you may have to rename them to have the extension "MPG", instead of the defaults of "MP4" and "M4V". It is an unfortunate fact of life that DLNA may claim support a lot of content, I have yet to find a "certifie...

Re: Insanity

Not sure what you are trying to accomplish - DVD players, in general, cannot handle MKV files, but most newer digital media players support them. You would have to use a program that will convert an MKV back into the files the DVD player is expecting, and write that to a disk. MakeMKV isn't intended...

Re: "Fuzzy" bass audio problems

Does it sound fuzzy on speakers, headset, or both? The decoders are pretty much hard-coded into VLC, but there are a lot of parameters you can tweak. In Windows, you can go to Tools/Preferences, select "Show Settings (all)" at the bottom, and go through the audio settings. I would start with setting...

Re: OT :Kubuntu:unable to copy large file to usb flash drive

Reformat the device as NTFS or another format that supports larger files. 4GB is a limitation of FAT32... But, FAT32 is what is "universal" to most operating systems, so that's the "normal" format for flash drives. Moving to something else pretty much locks you into sticking with one operating syste...

Re: Could Not Read "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Compl

Most stand-alone players will accept the occasional sector error and skip over it. Ripping is a different matter, though, because the object is to get a 100% accurate copy, not 99.95%. Just a thought - when you cleaned it, did you wax it? I do my cleaning with Pledge furniture polish. Spray it on, w...

The drives are having a problem reading the disk itself. The usual clean-disk-then-retry is the first step.

Glad you found the answer... For what it is worth, SMB networking has always been a pain to use on any non-Windows system, mostly because, well, Microsoft apparently threw it together over a few drunken party weekends, and then expected the rest of the world to understand it. ;) SOMETIMES the name-t...

Re: Rip files to NAS

And the path you used to access it from the command line didn't work in MakeMKV? By "access", do you mean read from the path, write files to it, or both? Does the user MakeMKV is running under have permissions to create directories and files on the NAS? Linux will enforce the strictest access limita...

It will save to a MOUNTED network resource. In Windows, you can specify a network resource that isn't currently mounted as a drive, and it will (essentially) be mounted behind the scenes for the duration of access. Assumptions will be made as to privileges and such, depending upon the security polic...
