... make a 100% 1:1 copy this is counterproductive. You can flash the ASUS BW-16D1HT 3.10 firmware to your LG drive. This firmware has no "jamless play".

Given that it looks like there's no way I can restore the factory firmware (or even any firmware in the future, is my guess, but we'll see), I bought another drive from Asus and will install that. If I ever need to rip a 4k disc, I'll swap them. :-/
