I have never had a problem with Makemkv and Win 8 - but I had to do a clean install of win 8 as it wouldn't upgrade my test win7 system successfully.
Apart from that problem it is just like win7 once you have removed the metro rubbish

With 1.7.3 I can update directly the defaults in makemkv preferences/advanced tab, and it all works
- no need to have a user profile
