Found a CD/DVD cleaner...that hadn't changed matters. Have also tried it on a different machine and ditto.
Am assuming the drive is hosed. Time to look at buying a new one I suspect. A little disappointing as it's only been used for maybe a dozen discs.

... I am wondering if the faster speed settings did something, or does an encrypted backup have less/no error checking. Drive is an LG WH16NS40 with WH16NS60 MK 1.02 firmware. encrypted backup still has full error checking

FIgured it out, the power supply that comes with the Vantec CB-ST00U3 isn't enough for the drive.
