Return the defective drives for replacement. There really isn't any other "fix" for a defective drive.

Updating the firmware will do nothing to speed up DVD reading. It uses a different laser than BD or UHD, so it doesn't affect it. The BW-16D1H-U has changed drives over the years. Early ones aren't UHD. Later ones need to have new firmware.

The files are used for MakeMKV to track information it needs for processing the disk. They aren't likely to "be" anything else.

No, MakeMKV will always try to give a complete copy of the files. If there are errors, the copy will be rejected.

If you are tolerant of errors, then cleaning the disk to remove the errors is probably your best bet.
