Trouble with subtitles and transcoding

I just got my first Bluray Movie. With all of my DVDs I rip them with MakeMKV and then I transcode with handbrake to bring it into a more managable size. This doesn't seem to be working with my Bluray disk. When I rip the MKV and try to play it in vlc I get this:

VLC does not support the audio or video format "undf". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this:

The video and audio work fine but none of the subtitles are showing up at all. When I run the file through Handbrake the produced MP4 will not play at all. What can I do?

I should mention the movie is Avatar. Is it a svq problem?

Its because not many players support PGS/SUP subtitles yet.

You can either:
1.) Use a nightly build of VLC that supports PGS subtitles
2.) extract the PGS subtitle with mkvextract or eac3to then OCR them with SupRip
3.) use a pre-made SRT file. (there is one for avatar floating around the forum)

Though I use MakeMKV for almost everything, and prefer it to all other solutions, I've found that specifically for movies that have forced subtitles (e.g. an english language movie with automatic english subtitles during a period where another language is spoken), this solution has been the easiest for me:

With AnyDVDHD running, I use AnotherEAC3toGui to rip the main title from my disc to MKV. It automatically converts the PGS subtitles to an SRT subtitle stream (inside the MKV, not as a separate file), and these subtitles play just fine in Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPC-HC) while preserving DXVA (hardware graphics acceleration).

This avoids the VLC bugginess issues (I can't get it to run stably; the slide bar always crashes it for me). Also avoids any multistep processes, separate files, or other troubles.

Note that any of the EAC3to-based solutions fare very poorly with episodic content (BD TV series discs) and is BD-only; that's why I love MakeMKV... it's a one step one stop solution for everything other than the BD-with-forced-subtitles, and as soon as MPC-HC builds in DXVA-supported PGS subtitles we should be in good shape.

I hope the mods don't mind my mentioning another product here, but this has been the best solution for me for this one small class of movies.

can anyone offer a solution for the reencoding. I want to get the filesize down. WHen i run it through handbrake the file won't work at all. I have my MKV file and my SRT file I'm ready to stick them together.

@jcl3042

(Sorry, I only saw your last post and not the first, stating it's about the "Avatar" BluRay, so I've deleted my response)

Try Ripbot264 as your x264 encoder instead of Handbrake and see if it can compress the raw Avatar MKV.
