Are there separate settings for the mkv and mp4 output?

Evaluating Makemkv and really liking what i see so far.
Just did a test main title rip of a DVD and I notice that the program produces an mkv file and an mp4 file.
I checked both in VLC and they both play perfectly. The mp4 is about a quarter the size of the mkv though and when I look at fine detail I can see that the mkv has better picture quality.
Are there settings for the mp4 and mkv output somewhere that specify bitrate / compression / pass through etc. I want to preserve the movie and primary soundtrack effectively losslessly if possible.
Also, what setting do I have to select to preserve fixed subtitles like the English subs for the Elvish scenes in the Lord of the Rings movies?

MakeMKV does not produce MP4 files; It will always output MKV files on DVD, and can either do MKV files or "Bluray file structure backup" for BDs.

And it doesn't recode the video to make it smaller. Handbrake can do that, along with outputting it as an MP4. However, give the same tracks, an MP4 and an MKV will be of similar size... Except some tracks cannot be put in an MP4 (Bluray subtitles and some high-end audio tracks, for example).

Well this is interesting. I chose a DVD to make an mkv of, set the destination filepath and watched the program generate an mkv AND and an MP4 in the same destination directory. I then tried a UHD disc and it generated an mkv only as expected.

Sure that you are using MakeMKV and not an other tool? MakeMKV does not creatd an compressed MP4 file. This is maybe done by Handbrake or whatever.

A tool like 'MediaInfo' would tell you what app ('Writing application') actually created the .mp4. Or, in Windows, Properties > Details.

Must've been a a prior rip from another test and I just didn't notice it there.
Cleaned the output directory and ran mkv again on the same title. Only an mkv created thankfully. Thanks folks.
