Region B cause any issues for Region A watcher?

Post by CZ Eddie »

I just bought a lot of 40 BluRay. My first purchase towards the goal of building up my collection of MKV titles.
Both myself and the seller are located in the continental USA.
The auction clearly stated "Region B", though the seller did not specify anything about what that meant.

I'm ripping & watching them just fine, but one title had a weird file system.
So I tried to play it in PowerDVD to figure out which file was the main movie.
And lo and be hold, PowerDVD refuses to play it, saying it's Region B.
And that's when it clicked in my head.
Region B is for Europe, not USA. doh!

Anyhow, I have noticed some weirdness with the Black Sails that I've ripped and watched so far.
They had no English subtitles available on the disk!
Am I going to experience other weirdness with the rest of the Region B movies?
Or was Black Sails just a fluke oddity and all the soundtracks/subtitles should be "just as normal" on these Region B BlueRay movies?

I'm worried that I might end up with half-assed Dolby Digital/DTS soundtracks.

I would guess it was just the disc. I've ripped a Doctor Who Bluray that was region B and it worked fine for me.

Just try another disc and find out is the best way to know for sure!!!

The subtitles and audio tracks that are available on any release will depend on the studio and the release. It has nothing to do with the region of the disc, and many collectors/enthusiasts will compare releases of the same movie from different regions before deciding what to buy, comparing video codec and quality, audio tracks, subtitles, extras, etc.

It's up to you to know the details of the disc you're buying. Sites such as https://www.blu-ray.com will give you all the details about a release.

I have plenty of Region B discs and no problems whatsoever.

Not inherently, but it's quite common for region B releases to have a wider variety of subtitle and dub options.

And yes, as with anything else sometimes it just varies for no reason. Universal's Blu-rays are all region-free, but Psycho got the original audio in foreign markets but a remix in the US, while Vertigo got the original audio in the US but a remix overseas.
