Any point choosing multiple audio tracks of the same language?

Post by ruins »

Hi

When I am ripping my Blu-ray collection I have been choosing the main title, the 'best' available english audio track, and forced english subs.

For example the Blu-ray I am ripping now has the option of:

DTS-HD MA surround 7.1 english (been choosing this on every rip so far)
- DTS surround 5.1 english
- DD stereo english

I actually only have a 2.0 speaker setup at the moment (the 5.1+ is in storage).

If I just choose the 'best' on every disc, will playback auto adjust down to 2.0 if required by the setup it is playing on, or do I need to have all of the audio tracks for any possible setup I might be watching this rip on.

Or is it best practice to choose every English audio track variation. (2.0, 5.1, 7.1). Not interested in commentaries etc, just the main movie tracks.

Hope that makes sense

In theory, if your player is 100% compliant, you can just use the "top level", as it contains compatible audio.

Most players aren't 100% compliant, though.

Be aware, that especially 2.0 tracks are more often comments from directors or actors.

Also Described Audio is often a 5.1 track, you'll notice pretty quickly if you accidentally get one of those though!

And if you're watching older movies, they may include original 2.0 or Mono tracks as well as newly remixed 5.1 or 7.1 tracks, so that's a preference to consider.

Thank you everyone, I appreciate it! I feel much better going forward now. Will also double check each individual disc to see what tracks are what from now on.

Cheers!
