I just upgraded to the latest version, and see now that this is part of the information when selecting tracks, Channel layout: 5.1(side). What does it mean? And why does it say side when the .1 is subwoofer? Or am i missing something?

The 'side' (versus 'back') means location of surround speakers.

Hmm, is this something embedded in the audio on the bluray? Or something makemkv decides? I have both side and rear surrounds,so i would hate for makemkv to lock the channel setting like this.
This "setting" or information was not present in earlier versions of makemkv, should i downgrade to an older version to get the "old" channel layout?

MakeMKV is not changing anything, it just displays the information about the stream. Before 1.8.9 it would just display 5.1 . Now it displays what kind of 5.1 you have. There are 2 different 5.1 layouts, the disc author decides which one to use.
