Or not. MakeMKV does not touch the video, no should it ever (that's whats Handbrake is for). Also, why not let you standalone do the upscaling?

At best, upscaling will be slow. And, if you search the handbrake forums for "upscale", you'll see that it is a bad idea...
You do NOT get additional detail by upscaling the source, you just get clumps of pixels instead of single pixels.
The whole "get more detail by zooming in with the computer" you see in CSI and other shows is computer guesswork in real life.

No need for any upconversion. You cant polish a turd into a golden nugget. A turd is still a turd even when made into a bigger turd.
The only way to get 4k video would be to start with a 4k source. That would be worth ripping.
