Quick question; when generating CMv4.0 content (3-1), how does one determine what Mastering Display to use? I assuming higher isn't necessarily better?
2 options:

1- just use the static metadata from your source HDR10
2- check the brightness first with madvr. If 95% of the movie is under 1000nits, use 1000nits MDL else, 4000.

Option 2 is better because some movies have a static MDL of 4000nits but the actual brightness is under 1000nits.
A 4000nits RPU is a lot darker than a 1000nits one regardless of the content's actual brightness and in my opinion, 4000nits MDL + low nits content is wrong without L2 trim passes because if you look at the generated(or original) trims with a 4000nits analysis, they brighten/compensate a lot for the darkness a 4000 rpu brings.

If you have a display with a max brightness under 1000 nits, is there any point to using the 4000 nits option?

Hi guys, I'm working on the movie The Equalizer, and I want to inject Dolby Vision coming from the iTunes WEB-DL but I've noticed something I've never seen in a rpu:

I've never seen multiple values for L6 metadata, could anyone explain why?

your display capabilities dont matter, you should use the correct MDL according to the content brightness.

yes it happens sometimes. I guess if you would play the movie in HDR10 on a device that can convert DV to HDR10, they would be used.

With the RESET_9999 script, I can bake the EL and get the same bit rate (without compression) than the original movie ?

Is this an example of what you're talking about here? The MaxCLL basically doesn't go above 1000 nits, so I should choose 1000 nits for 3-1 despite the MDL being reported as 4000 nits?

Also, how does expanded brightness via FEL factor into this? Scream 3 has FEL expanded brightness. Wouldn't the FEL brightness be taking it over 1000 nits?

FEL is the difference between the original master and the hdr10 encode. The difference can be anything they decide.

I'm sorry but I don't really understand how to act on this.
Say you have the following situation, as with Scream (your screenshots here: https://slow.pics/c/j9rBXDQU). The MDL is listed as 4000 nits.
The HDR plot goes barely over 1000 nits. Maybe, for the sake of argument, we could say that it doesn't really go over 1000 nits at all, like the plot I shared of Scream 3. But the DV plot goes much higher, almost to 4000 nits.
In this situation, using 3-1, should I choose the 1000 nits option or the 4000 nits option?
Thank you!

Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One in Dolby Vision Profile 8 is completely unwatchable on Philips TV.
Tried Apple TV 4K, Shield TV Pro but same picture. Plex and Vimu installed on the TV are the same.
If I buy the film from iTunes the picture is perfect and if I download the original Profile 5 version it is perfect.
What is causing the problem with Profile 8?

As I said, you measure any video with madvr, if 95% is under 1000nits , you use 1000nits MDL in 3-1.

Fel dv plot has nothing to do with this.

Yeah, not surprised.
The HDR10 and P5 DV versions have different brightness and all those uploaders make P8 hybrid assuming its always the same.

Hi guys, I've lately started generating hdr10+/dv for all my movies that don't have them. The first thing to do before generating comes to encoding an Apple ProRes version of the movie. For instance, one could set encoding to maximum quality and the resulting file will be huge, while I usually keep quality at 5 in which I found a good compromise between quality and space, so how much of importance does the ProRes quality have to do with the final result?

I use -qscale:v 3 and RESET's script has -qscale:v 4, which I believe he found to be best overall compromise between speed/size and PQ/accuracy, if I'm not mistaken.

Apparently the new Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2Gen) 2023 16GB supports:
-Dolby TrueHD (Atmos) passthrough
-DTS passthrough
-DTS-HD passthrough (basic profile)
which is new.
Still no FEL / Profile 7 DoVi support per https://developer.amazon.com/docs/fire- ... ax_gen2_16 though.

„Dolby Vision support for Profile 4-MEL, 5, 8, 9 & 10. (Up to Level 9 for profiles 5, 8 and 10. Up to Level 5 for Profile 9)“
Shield TV 2017 -> LG DSN10YG Soundbar with SPK8 Rears -> LG B1 OLED
