UHD The Last Jedi failing at 27Gigs

Hi all,

I am new to the forums and have been reading quite a bit. I saw a few folks that have successfully backed up their UHD copies of The Last Jedi. I was hoping for some assistance as I cannot get it to work after 5 attempts. I have successfully saved Deadpool and a few others but this one is just darned stubborn. I have the latest key file and here is what is happening.

My Blu Ray Drive is an LG BH16NS40 with firmware 1.02

It reads the disk and encounters a number of offset problems and then continues to back up. Then as it gets to around a 27Gig ouput file it just stops and the window pops up saying it failed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I'm trying to go the backup route now but I am getting errors as it copies. If it works I will let you all know. If anyone has any ideas other than this please advise.

This is the route that may be successful for you.

There have been a few reports of MakeMKV users who have had problems/errors similar to what you mention in your original post and are resolved after they decrypt/backup the FULL disk to the HDD first (ignoring any errors reported). Even if it returns error in this process it may backup the disk fully successfully. Then create the mkv off that backup.

I'm also unable to rip Last Jedi UHD. Bought copy from Best Buy (non-Steelbook) and am getting tons of SCSI Read and other errors. I submitted my SVQ dump in hopes it could be added as a third code to the hashed_key text file, but still only see two Jedi codes in the database.

This is on an LG BE16NU50 external drive, 1.01d.

No luck so far. It fails to make a backup as well. I also have the Non-Steelbox version from Best Buy. But I'm not giving up!!!

Same deal for me. The backup I just tried gave me the following error:
IPC error (Mac OS X)
The IPC error happens when operating system (Mac OS X) suddenly "looses" the Blu-ray drive. Most of the time this happens with external USB drives and is caused by inadequate USB power. Please try using a powered USB enclosure (or powered USB hub) and short USB cables.

I'm using a powered USB enclosure. I've seen two or three other types of error messages when the rip has failed when opening the disc first.

I was able to successfully get this one backed up. However, on the disc I had, the 2nd video file was the correct one for written English. The first video file had the scrolling star wars classic intro in Spanish.

On Windows, it is pretty difficult to rip the Last Jedi. The issue seems like a manufacturing defect, but it also seems like some sort of copy protection measure. I'm not sure what it is.

I know doing a full decrypted backup like I mention below seems overly complicated, but it seems to be more reliable than simply trying to save the movie to an MKV file first.

Here's what I did to rip the Last Jedi without errors. It will take multiple tries, unfortunately. Expect to attempt ripping at least 4-6 times before achieving success.
  • I have only tested this process on my v1.02 WH16NS40 drive. It might work on other drives, but no guarantees.
    1. Attempt a full decrypted backup at least 3 times. (You must do a full backup, not simply rip to MKV.)
    2. Eject the drive tray and close it again.
    3. Repeat the above steps until you get an error-free rip.
    4. Open your decrypted backup with MakeMKV and save your movie to MKV.
===================================================

On Linux, ripping the Last Jedi UHD seems a little easier.
spear wrote: After the rip fails, I run something like this on a shell command line (I'm on a Linux system) to read through the file where MakeMKV stopped:

Code: Select all

# dd if=/path/to/BDMV/STREAM/00018.m2ts of=/dev/null bs=1M
It completes without error, which means it was able to read every byte of that file from disc. Then I run MakeMKV to rip again, and this time it works.
After doing a DD copy (without errors) like our friend "spear" did, do a full decrypted backup of the disc with MakeMKV. Once you have your decrypted backup, open the backup with MakeMKV and save the movie to MKV.

Thanks Liquidmetal!

I finally gave up and exchanged the disk for the Metal Box Best Buy edition. Popped it in and bam it worked on the first pass for both the BluRay and UHD versions of the movie. I am all set. I think the key for the NON-METAL BOX version might not be in the code file.

Regards

The non steelbook version IS in the hashfile and WILL work if you have a good disc. I know this since I ripped it last week (or week before) myself. What I believe may be occurring are scratches on the discs due to how they are packaged, this will cause issues backing up since UHDBRS are MUCH more sensitive to things like scratches, smudges, etc. I also had playback errors on my X800 with the 1st disc I got for TLJ. Once I got a replacement, it worked without issues and was a clean disc (1st disc had hard to see scratches).

I also have a v1.02 WH16NS40 and have had a lot of trouble ripping UHD The Last Jedi on Windows 10. After trying and returning THREE different copies of the movie, I was ready to give up. However, I stumbled upon this post and LiquidMetal's trick actually worked. My first three attempts at creating a fully decrypted backup failed, but the errors were at different offsets each time. The fourth attempt succeeded, and then I was able to create an MKV from the rip. Thanks LiquidMetal!

I tried this on my drive five times but didn't have any luck. I did get past the 27 Gig mark a couple times, but it still ended up failing eventually.

Same here with the Last Jedi. I have ripped several UHD disks that I own to backup the disks, so I know both of my drives work fine. This one just seems to fail really consistantly. It was purchased from walmart, non steal box. I'm also having the same issue with Superman VS Batman, on both of my UHD drives. Both are LG WH16NS40, and have not been upgraded and have the NS50 service code.

Considering that both of my drives are doing this consistantly, I would think this is a bad batch of disks, or a hash issue.

Doing the backup process still reports hash errors even with the disk decrypted. I'm going to let it run through and see if I can get it to completly rip even with the hash errors.

Just an update, exchanged out the disk and all of the issues I was having went away. Definitely, some bad disks pressed by Disney out in the wild.
