Cannot read some discs

Post by Rainer »

I have a Asus BW-16D1HT and no stand-alone-player (so I cannot verify whether something is wrong with the not working discs).
The Asus is connected via SATA-USB-Adapter.

The drive works with some discs.
I was able to copy the UHD Kong: Skull Island & Atomic Blonde.

But with 2 other UHD I have the problem that the drive (windows) don't recognise them.
I mean that the OS doesn't show me that a disc is in the drive.
The Asus is spinning again and again.

The discs are Independent Day & Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

The drive seems to be okay since it recognises still the first two discs.
What could be the reason?

I am using Windows 8.1 but it doesn't seem to be an OS problem (tried to connect the drive to Win 7)
The drive was manufactured in January 2018.

What version of MakeMKV are you using?

Also, I am assuming that the discs are all new since you don't have a stand alone player. Woodstocks question is something that we need to know. My question is this. Have you cleaned the discs? I recommend doing that for all discs. The best way to do it is to us a 50/50 mix of distilled water and rubbing alcohol with a clean microfiber cloth. Good Luck.

I tried to clean the discs before - with no luck.
I use MakeMKV v1.12.3 win (x64 release).

But shouldn't the file manager of windows show the files of the discs - regardless of the version of MakeMKV?
Or are some discs always being 'hidden'?

There is a documented problem with v1.12.3. You should go back and install v1.12.2 and your problem should go away.

In the message (currently) at the top of the General section on 1.12.3, the link to old versions is:

Thanks!

I tried
https://www.makemkv.com/download/
and
https://www.makemkv.com/download/Setup_ ... 1.12.2.exe
and couldn't find the old versions.

Edit:
Version 1.12.2 showed the disc but I got the following errors
Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading 'BD-RE ASUS BW-16D1HT 3.02' at offset '32494647296'
Error 'OS error - STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR' occurred while reading '\Device\CdRom1' at offset '32494647296'
Error 'Scsi error - NOT READY:LOGICAL UNIT IS IN PROCESS OF BECOMING READY' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00605.m2ts' at offset '129024
Error 'Scsi error - HARDWARE ERROR:TIMEOUT ON LOGICAL UNIT' occurred while reading 'BD-RE ASUS BW-16D1HT 3.02' at offset '32494647296'
So I have to assume that the disc is damaged?
Or could the drive have problems?

It seems to be the disc.
After trying several times the drive became very warm.
And when I ejected the disc now - it had a crack.
