The volume key is unknown for this disc

Post by Highlander1701 »

Hi! This is the first time since i started using MakeMKV I ever had an error of any kind so I thought I would put it to the forum to see if anyone could help. I'm running the latest registered version of MakeMKV if that makes any difference. The error I get is as follows:

The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted.

It might be the disk is newly released within the past fortnight.

Thanks for any help or comments
Regards
H!

Saved AACS dump file as C:\Users\[redacted]/.MakeMKV/MKB20_v70_The_Wicker_Man_-_Disc_1_3559.tgz
And you've forwarded this file to svq@makemkv.com for processing, yes?

How quick did this get solved? or did it at all?

I have two 4K Blurays without volume keys and one just released two days ago.

Most keys are generated within a couple of days after the "important bits" (i.e., the .TGZ file generated) are submitted to the author.

You do, of course, have to submit them AND allow MakeMKV access to the outside world so it can fetch them.

How can I tell if MakeMKV is actually downloading the latest keys, or however that works. Or do I suppose it is able to reach the service if there is no error about not getting to it.

I am still trying to rip Wonka (2023) 4K.

MakeMKV shows a message in the log when it downloads new hashed keys. It looks like:

Code: Select all

Downloading latest HK to C:\Users\xxxxxxxxx/.MakeMKV ...
If it tries to download hashed keys and it fails, there'll be a message for that too.

Code: Select all

Automatic HK downloading is disabled or failed.

I too am not seeing anything in the logs regarding trying to download new keys. I'm still not able to rip two 4k discs I own.

I made submissions twice for both 4k versions of The Martian Extended ( MKB20_v60_The_Martian_-_Extended_Edition_F8C9.tgz ), and Bohemian Rhapsody ( MKB20_v66_Bohemian_Rhapsody_65F1.tgz ). The original submission I made over 2 years ago, and the re-submission a few weeks ago.

Your log suggests that your MakeMKV thinks it has the latest set of hashed keys and that the key needed for Wonka (2023) is not yet available. The thread Wonka 4k Dump Submitted indicates that someone sent that same dump, MKB20_v77_Wonka_449A.tgz, on February 24, 2024. I don't see anyone saying they have gotten a hashed key for it in the usual MakeMKV way. Some people have reported success using the keydb.cfg method, which you can find links for in the Wonka thread.

Maybe post a full log? I would expect those older titles to have hashed keys available.
