LG WH14NS40 2012-05-15

Post by bxs122 »

I am a longtime MakeMKV user, beginning with the original version.
My BluRay drive is the first and only one I've ever purchased, an LG WH14NS40 -- it's label says 2012.

I've ripped DVD and BluRay to my movie drives and never had an issue.
I'm new to 4k UHD and have avoided them until now.

Reading through all the forum posts, I'm confused what drives will and will not work to support 4k UHD with MakeMKV.

Make MKV info for LG WH14NS40

There is mention in the forum notes not to flash older drives?
If a MK firmware patch is needed, would it be WH16NS60 1.02M or WH14NS40 1.05 ??

Any help is appreciated.

Your drive was built a full 3 years before the spec for UHD was finalized, so UHD is out of the question. It's also using the wrong chipset for updating beyond regular BDs (MT1939), so it's best to simply leave that drive to doing simple stuff.

Now the search begins for the "perfect UHD drive"!

Much appreciated Woodstock.
I finally found a post about drives from 2012 timeframe. Shame. It's a great drive. Always worked.

Since I do want to get into backing up my 4k UHDs, what's the recommended drive to use?
There's so many listed on these forums and all seem to come with gotchas. I'm capable of updating firmware and won't need a pre-flashed.

UPDATE — I found a WH16NS40 on Amazon. That should work.

Thanks.
