Can anyone recommend a good EXTERNAL LibreDrive compatible Blu-Ray player / burner

Post by morkoth4682 »

Hello everyone... just joined and looking for some advice... I'm building a new PC from scratch (first time in over 15 years) and things have changed quite a bit. One thing is that my new case (Antec Torque) does not include any standard drive bays, just 2.5" / 3.5" for SSD's... I initially purchased the LG WH16NS40 before I found out that the case does not support it... So now I'm looking at external options instead, but the LibreDrive list does not indicate which are which.

Can someone here recommend a good external LibreDrive?

Thanks!

I ended up going with the Asus BW-16D1X-U 16x External Blu-ray BDXL Drive... I heard that all the Asus BW-16* drives support LibreDrive mode... Once I finish getting my pc set-up I'll let you all know if it works...

The Asus "U" drive is NOT LibreDrive compatible. It won't do UHD. It is not the same as the other Asus '16D1' drives under the hood.

I used to own one, but I gave it to a friend who has no aspirations of doing UHD. It's a good BD drive, but not an excellent one.

What's good is pretty subjective. Here's my experience with the two drives I have. I have the LG BP50NB40 svc-NB50 external slim and the LG WH16NS60 internal drive that was put in an external USB 3.0 enclosure.

Here are the differences between the two.

LG BP50NB40
- To get it to read UHD discs, it must be flashed with the hybrid firmware BP60NB10 to get UHD functionality, otherwise it's just LibreDrive
- Uses two USB 2.0 ports but no power adapter needed.
- Small and slim, easy to carry around and put in a laptop bag.
- The slim hardware feels like it can break more easily or won't last as long when compared to the my other drive, but I've had this drive for over 2 years and it still works fine.

LG WH16NS60
- I couldn't get it to flash the firmware while the drive was in the external enclosure so I had to connect the drive to the motherboard to flash, only need to do it once so its not bad.
- External enclosure uses one USB 3.0 port, however it needs a power adapter to get enough power.
- Bigger than the slim drive and not as portable if you intend to use it for a laptop.
- Due to it's size and heft, the drive feels like it can last a long time from use.
- Depending on the disc, it can sometimes read discs 10x or higher but it's rare, at least for me.

Both can read UHD discs and both can read at roughly the same speeds, 4x-6x on average. I use the slim drive for my laptop and the bigger one on my main PC. I use the LG WH16NS60 most of the time out of preference.
