Assist Flashing LG BP50NB40

Post by wallacere1 »

First, thanks to all that have worked to make UHD disks available.

I am having trouble flashing a drive
LG BP50NB40
SVC Code: NB50
Firmware 1.01 (updated from 1.00)
Manufacture Date October 2016
Running on WIndows 10 Pro

I have watched the video and downloaded BH14NS40_N1.00-A4_patched and mk-firmware-pack-20191013. I have tried flashing with the MK bin files and all have failed to flash.
BP50NB40-NB50, (0% no progress)
BP55EB40-NB50, (0% no progress)
BP60NB10, (0% no progress)
DE_LG_BP50NB40-NB50_1.01_MK_HBD, (Invalid F/W Checksum is not matched)
DE_LG_BP60NB10_1.00_MK_HBD. (Invalid F/W Checksum is not matched)

The flash tool opens and identifies my drive, I navigate to the folder with the appropriate .bin file and the hit the execute button. For the standard MK files the flash progress window opens and sits at 0% without any progress. The program does not crash or error, just nothing... The hybrid files fault with a checksum not matched.

Any tips, tricks or corrections that could be suggested would be appreciated (short of buying a pre-flashed drive!!). I am anxious to start buying some of my favorite titles in 4K and adding them to my video library.

Is this an internal drive or is it attached via USB in an enclosure? If attached via USB then that is the reason. Some enclosures don't support all necessary commands that are needed for flashing.

To enable UHD reading on the BP50NB40, you must cross-flash it to BP60NB10 using my hybrid HBD firmware. Please go to https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 16&t=18933 and READ the first post, then download the modified ASUS flasher and the HBD firmware.

You MUST use the ASUS flasher to achieve your goal.

I think you are stuck on 1.01 you should not have updated it.
If you still can't downgraded with Marty's hbd fw contact makemkv support and see if he can dump your fw to make an mk out of it otherwise you are out of luck

I think Billycar11 is correct - firmware upgraded some time ago from 1.00 > 1.01, long before I was even contemplating UHD videos. New FW must not be allowing crossflash, or downgrade. The ASUS flasher opens the drawer, and then returns an error "Updating Error #3". Thanks for reviewing, and I'll touch base with MK support, or free up some cash for a pre-flashed drive.

No 4K content to burn yet, so the need is not urgent, but with the tools in place to add 4K to my library, I will find a way!

Thanks

That's strange. BP50NB40 1.01 has been around for ages. When I did my initial testing on my own BP50NB40, I successfully flashed it from 1.01 to 1.01-MK (and have done so for a few customers as well). Only the latest version of the ASUS flasher will work.

This is when I realized that UHD reading was still not functional and created the HBD firmware to flash the BP50NB40 from 1.01 to BP60NB10 1.00.

Excerpts from the Modified ASUS flasher thread:

EDIT (24.08.2019): I have updated the Modified ASUS Flasher which will now allow:
  • The LG BP60NB10 external UHD drive to be flashed with firmware LG_BP60NB10_1.00_MK only.
  • The LG BP50NB40 external Blu-Ray drive to be flashed with firmware LG_BP50NB40-NB50_1.01_MK only. (Not UHD friendly but enables libredrive.)

EDIT (03.09.2019):
I have created 2 modified (hybrid = HBD) firmwares solely for the BP50NB40. Firmware BP60NB10_1.00_MK_HBD will allow you to flash your BP50NB40 to BP60NB10. Firmware BP50NB40-NB50_1.01_MK_HBD will allow you to go back to BP50NB40_1.01_MK if you ever require it.

Now, firmware BP50NB40 1.02 is a different story. Firmware 1.02 is currently not downgradeable. (Neither is BP60NB10 1.01)

Cheers

FYI, I'm having the same problem as wallacere1 with the BP50NB40 (external, USB0-connected)

Currently fw 1.01 (upgraded ages ago from 1.00)
Attempting firmware patch to 1.02 (from MK 20191013.zip)
Stuck at 0%.

Don't go to firmware 1.02! You need 1.01-MK from "mk-firmware-pack-20190728" Here it is below.

PS: I also assume your BP50NB40 is SVC: NB50 and that MakeMKV shows the drive as "Drive Platform: MT1959".

Hi. I'm a super noob at this kind of thing. I just started getting into ripping my disks after I bought a Synology NAS. The convenience is awesome. So far though, I have only been able to rip the few DVDs I have since I only had a DVD drive in my laptop. I have lots of blurays and 4k blurays in my library though. Started watching tutorials and reading some of these entries and found out about Libredrive.
Could someone help point me to the best (reliable and simple) external bluray drive that I can successfully use to rip my 4k bluerays with Libredrive. Not sure how to confirm this capability. Also, How do I determine what firmware comes on the drive? Lots of these threads are from kind of a while ago. Is it possible that the drives all come with updated firmware and it wouldn't work anyway.
Thanks a lot for any help!!

Start by fully reading this guide:

https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 16&t=19634

Please pay attention to the guides/pinned posts across the forum in each respective forum section as they will answer some or all of these common questions and help avoid problems/headaches in the future with the process.

Since you want an external reliable drive, you might be better off buying and internal drive + an external USB enclosure. The guide provides options for both. As that may be an option if you find it difficult to find an external drive in your area that is UHD media capable.

Also, understand that Libredrive does not directly mean AACS decryption for UHD content. Further discussed and clarified in posts like this one:

https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 19&t=23298

Lastly, the MakeMKV window will provide drive information (e.g. model, firmware version, etc) when the app is running and a disc is inserted into the drive. That will inform you what you are running on at that time. And yes, drive manufactures have patch their current firmwares to try and keep people from ripping. And why you have to flash to firmware that will allow UHD content ripping. As also discussed in the guide linked above.

I have my USB LG BP50NB40 MT1959 service code NB50 saying Firmware version 1.01, but when I put in a 4K ULTRA HD BLU RAY, it does not recognize that there is a disk in it. When i put in a regular BLU RAY disc, the drive sees the disc fine. Any ideas? If this works, why doesn't my drive see the disc? I have rebooted, and unplugged it and plugged it back in etc. :?:

cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV"

makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes -d E: rawflash enc -i C:\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BP50NB40-NB50-1.01-NM00200-211711231615.bin

You need to flash to this. From the UHD guide:

BP50NB40 to > BP50NB40-NB50-1.03MK then to > BP60NB10 1.02MK or 1.00MK
NB52 to > BP50NB40-NB50-1.03MK with enc > BP50NB40-NB50-1.03MK with bootloader/full flash > BP60NB10 1.00_HBD from Marty download/file.php?id=2143
if using command line add "full" after rawflash
