I recently converted an old MacPro to a file / Plex server. Now I would like to include a LibreDrive capable drive, so that I can rip 4k Disks as well.

What is the recommended drive at the moment for a MacPro with High Sierra?

With the LG BU40N becoming more popular/recommended recently overall due to its reliability if willing to go external + enclosure under certain circumstances due to its slim profile.

Hi Rainer. I’m using the ASUS BW-16D1HT, UHD Friendly Internal 5.25 drive and it has performed great in my Mac, High Sierra or Mojave. The LG WH16NS60, UHD Official Internal 5.25 or LG WH16NS40, UHD Friendly Internal 5.25 are also popular choices. You can have the drive as internal or external. MakeMKV works great on any Mac OSX. Do these drives have to be flashed to use LibreDrive, and if no, can they be flashed and what would the advantage in flashing them be?

I would prefer to use them initially as is, and maybe flashing them later, if it has advantages.

A full sized drive either the ASUS BW-16D1HT or LG WH16NS60. Either myself or others are happy to hook you up with a pre-flashed and pre-tested drive should wish you sub contract the task and support fellow forum members

You're Welcome. If you purchased the ASUS BW-16D1HT drive that was manufactured from 2016 up to the current date, the drive can be flashed. Just note, if the ASUS BW-16D1HT was manufactured in 2016 to early 2017, these batch of Asus drives can already read and rip 4K UHD without the need to flash the firmware. I have an ASUS BW-16D1HT made in 2016 can read 4K UHDs without flashing but you have the option to flash the firmware to a different version. Just DON'T buy an Asus or LG drive manufactured before 2015. These drives cannot be flashed. These notes are indicated in BillyCar's Guide he made. I mentioned this here to make sure you don't miss it. You could also buy drives from some members here who offer ready to use drives or flashing services.

I'm new to this forum but am on the same mission as Rainer (4K ripping using a MAC PRO / Plex / Kobi server). I don't want to attempt the flashing of the UHD drive in OSX myself but was wondering if someone can please clarify my assumptions about the flashing process:

1. The only hardware that is flashed in the process is the UHD drive.
2. A UHD drive which is flashed using a PC and Windows (perhaps by a forum member) will then work in a MAC (running the OSX version of MakeMKV).

Yes only the drive is flashed

Yes a drive that is flashed on another os will work on Mac windows or linux

Whilst I believe this flashing process can be done remotely, does that mean that a forum member offering a flashing service in the USA using Windows 10 can remotely flash an LG WH16NS60 in a Mac running OSX High Sierra in Australia?

It is possible but the best thing is to do it on windows I offer remote flashing but won't flash on a Mac even though I know it's possible because u don't have much experience with it.

It worked great. He flashed the drive using Windows 10 and just as you said it worked perfectly in my 2009 Mac Pro for building a 4K library

The reading speed with any bluray also seems to be enhanced which is another big plus.
