Pioneer BDR-XD05B drive not reading UHD discs

Post by katieb »

Hi there, I'm a bit of a novice at this stuff so I may be missing something but figured I'd come here for help. I have a Pioneer BDR-XD05B that has worked well for many years and still does with regular blu-ray disc, but I bought a couple UHD discs recently and MakeMKV can not see any UHD discs that I've tried even though regular blu-rays still work perfectly.

I see there's a lot of talk about Pioneer firmwares but I didn't see anything about this drive that was helpful. I also didn't see this drive in the MK firmware pack.

I'm on a fresh install of Windows 11 Pro 22H2 with MakeMKV 1.17.4.

MakeMKV reads the following information from my drive (I left out the serial number):

Drive Information
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-XD05
Revision: 3.01
Firmware date: 2014-12-26
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 42

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: RS8231
Firmware name: PIONEER BDR-XD05
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 3.01/ID34
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

I read in another post that the RS8xxx platform should work, and this one does for regular blu-rays just not UHD. Thanks in advance.

Hello!
I came looking here because I have the exact same problem with (almost) the exact same drive. I was surprised to find that you'd posted your message only a few hours ago!
I wish I had a solution, but I'm also trying to figure out why this supposedly supported feature isn't working.

I've got the Pioneer BD-RW BDR-XD05, with these specs:

Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/rdisk6

Current profile: BD-ROM

Manufacturer: PIONEER

Product: BD-RW BDR-XD05

Revision: 3.01

Firmware date: 2014-12-26

Bus encryption flags: 1B

Highest AACS version: 76

LibreDrive Information

Status: Enabled

Drive platform: RS8231

Firmware name: PIONEER BDR-XD05

Firmware type: Original (unpatched)

Firmware version: 3.01/ID34

DVD all regions: Yes

BD raw data read: Yes

BD raw metadata read: Yes

Unrestricted read speed: Yes

I'm using MakeMKV 1.17.4 on macOS Ventura, running on an M1 Mac Mini.
My drive has never been able to do anything with UHD discs besides try to read them about 20 times and then spit out a "no disc inserted" error. The possibility of getting MakeMKV to read them is really exciting, so I'm also very interested in finding out if this is actually possible.

Thanks in advance.

This drive model is not UHD capable.
