I upraded my Lubuntu from 18.04 to 18.10.

When trying to start MakeMKV it gave an error "failed to initialise". So I downloaded the two files and went through the installation. Now it starts up but says I have to download a newer version.

Any hints?

Thanks, but that's weird. I never had to do this. I just upgraded every time it said so.

Weird only in that you've never encountered it before. Current version was released 24.7.2018 & the beta key expires every ~2 months.
