Install Java for Mac OS High Sierra

Post by tntmac » Tue Dec 19, 2017 2:56 pm

Get the JRE download from this link:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/ ... 33155.html

I downloaded the jre-8u151-macosx-x64.dmg

After installing, you can find the location of your JRE environment from you Control Panel in System Prefereneces

Point your MakeMKV install to this location in MakeMKV Preferences.

In my case that was: /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java

Seems to be working so far

Thanks. Personally I can't get it to work under Sierra though. MakeMKV doesn't do anything. Does MakeMKV output *anything* in your log, when it uses Java for anything?

With debug logging turned on (haven't tested it with it off), when a disk with obfuscation is inserted, MakeMKV reports the version of Java it found and used. If there is no obfuscation on the disk, MakeMKV doesn't even look for Java, as far as I can tell.

Thanks, that's nice to know! If you haven't pointed MakeMKV to your Java installation, does it report anything different in the log?

I got the MakeMKV to work with Java *once* several months ago, and then it never worked again, and I would really like this to work, and the more clues I can get as to why it doesn't work, the better.

If Java is needed AND it can't be found, the log does say it could not find a Java installation. At least, I think I remember it doing that... it's been a year or so ago that I broke down and allowed Java back on this machine.

I have tried to rip Macbeth (2015), and it does use obfuscation (AACS v58 according to MakeMKV), and MakeMKV makes no indication of which track is the correct one.

My log looks like this:
Debug log started at Sat Jan 13 11:05:03 2018 , written by MakeMKV v1.10.9 darwin(x64-release)
Using 524544KB for read cache.

50 more lines looking like the one just above
I assume this means that MakeMKV doesn't detect my java installation, based on your previous comments Woodstock?

MakeMKV 1.10.9 on a machine with no Java installed, Ender's Game (with obfuscation) inserted:

If MakeMKV detects Java-based playlist obfuscation, it's going to display one of the two messages. If it doesn't think there is obfuscation, then no message about Java would appear.

If you have a disk with obfuscation that isn't detected, then it should be reported according to the message Mike posted here: http://makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=14330

Thank you Woodstock, post of the year so far! :) At least for my Macbeth disc here, it must mean it doesn't detect the obfuscation.

Oh, know it, dealing with jdk both on macOS and other unix-based systems could give a real headache. When I'd started with programming java, I faced the same troubles on Ubuntu-powered laptop. And you know, this thing looks pretty easy when described by the johns over the forums, but irl there is always some specific things that you can't figure out for now. Lucky me, I found this resource in order to get all the fundamentals and more on how to learn java https://explainjava.com/ in the easiest way. I think, you shall try out this one too, they have a lot of articles on most common problems and mistakes with installing and managing JDK as well

I don't think those articles will help us much unfortunately.

But back on topic, I now have multiple Blu-rays where the obfuscation isn't detected by MakeMKV, despite it clearly being there, as there's is zero mention of Java runtime is required in the logs. I've installed, removed and reinstalled Java countless times now, trying to get it to work, so I am pretty sure my problem isn't there.

So I am starting to assume that the problem lies elsewhere - Is is possible that the drive is causing this for me? I don't mind buying a more modern drive if that is the case, but the current one appear to be working most of the time otherwise. :) It would be nice to get mike's feedback on this, as I would love to get it to work.
