How-To Enable DASPI kernel extension on Mac OS Sierra 10.12

Post by turnkit »

I finally figured out how to get the DASPI kernel extension to say that it is working on Sierra after regularly seeing the message,
"It's highly recommended to install DASPI kernel extension to improve performance."

Seems like this should be in the sticky but I didn't see it so in case it really isn't elsewhere here's how I did it for my system:

1) reboot your Mac and hold the command+R to enter recovery mode. Some links said to hold it down right after the chime until the Apple logo appears and some said you had to hold it down all the way until the recovery showed up. I had to reboot a few times so I wasn't sure when it worked.
2) when you get the recovery console choose Terminal
3) Following the information here: http://anadoxin.org/blog/basic-facts-ab ... sions.html I typed the followinging in the terminal:
csrutil enable --without kext

After that I reboot. (I just typed reboot on the command line.)

When the system came up I now got the message from makemkv:
Optical drive "BD-RE ASUS BW-12D1S-U E401" opened in DASPI v1.5 mode

Before this I was getting:
Optical drive "BD-RE ASUS BW-12D1S-U E401d" opened in OS access mode.

I still am having DVD-R's from homebrew systems just hang during scanning (while other discs, both DVD and BD were working fine) so I still need to figure that out but at least I won't get the nag message anymore leaving me thinking I could be doing more to get good reads.

I followed the steps here that you've given
(restarting the Mac, opening terminal in recovery mode and typing in:
csrutil enable --without kext, then reboot

but my MakeMKV still says opened in OS access mode

Is it because of my OS? Should I not bother if I'm running on macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)?

If MakeMKV needs DASPI, it will tell you to install it. Otherwise, leave it out.

When I open MakeMKV is always displays this message:

MakeMKV v1.12.0 darwin(x64-release) started
Optical drive "BD-RE BUFFALO Optical Drive BN10d" opened in OS access mode.
Optical drive "BD-ROM WD Virtual CD 1110 1032" opened in OS access mode.
It's highly recommended to install DASPI kernel extension to improve performance.

Does that mean I would benefit from installing the DASPI kernel extension?

I'd say yes it does. It isn't mandatory, but it would make it run faster.

So then is there something I’ve done wrong with my attempt to enable the extension?
Should I try again?

That question would need to be answered by either Mike or a Mac user.... Sorry.
