Compression

Post by heid4055 »

hello everybody!

I am using Makemkv to rip the main movie with audio into a MKV. My MKVs are areound 25-35 Gigs on average and I am looking for a way to compress these mkvs without quality loss. I know about handbrake and other software but does anyone know of a quicker way for me to do this? Sort of like a DVDshrink for Blu Rays :)

I appreciate any assistance you might have!

Hi, compression inherently takes a long time and handbrake is one of the more "noob friendly" GUI's available (All free tools are based on the same set of tools. x264 and ffmpeg). You can make handbrake go very fast though. But if you want good compression at reasonable file sizes:

1.) resize to 720p (will save a lot of time encoding and a lot of space, and most likely you wont be able to tell much difference from 1080p)
2.) take a nap, hike, make coffee ... whatever... encoding takes time.
