How to purge double captions in an .srt file?

Post by RAHRL »

I have a tv-series (Banacek) with these terrible rolling captions.

Usually there are about 2 till 3 lines of subtitles at the bottom center. When an actor speaks the words are appended to the end (right bottom) and the existing words are shifted back (to the left and upwards). At the front (top left) the words are pushed out.

This results in the subtitles moving all the time while existing subtitles stay on the screen even if the words have long passed. You can't avoid getting dizzy when you try to read them.

I created an .srt file from the video and it clearly shows the double text.

SubtitleEdit has an option to remove double text, but it doesn't work in this case, probably because the lines are not exactly the same.
It is not realistic to expect to edit the .srt manually, it would take a day per episode.

I have seen this problem reported on different platforms, but without a good solution. Is there a tool that can fix this?
