MPC-HC x64 wont play ripped BD Jack Reacher - Never Go Back

Post by Dingo69 »

Ripped the disk with no errors, using 1.10.4 on Win 10.

When opening in MPC-HC x64 (latest stable build - 1.7.10), doesn't play and just hangs at 0:00:00 (i.e. no time progression).

Any ideas to fix?

Re: MPC-HC x64 wont play ripped BD Jack Reacher - Never Go B

Post by Woodstock »

First suggestion would be to try playing the file with another player. While it has its flaws, VLC from videolan.org seems to be able to at least play every MakeMKV-generated file I've thrown at it. It doesn't like h265 video on my system, but Blurays do not use that.

If VLC also can't play it, then there is likely something wrong with the MKV file. If VLC does play it, though, the suspicion falls to the MPC software.

Thanks for the tip.

It played the video in VLC, but the audio kept cutting in and out.

Maybe it's a crappy disc? I'll try cleaning it and re-ripp.

Cleaned the disc with the same result. I'll presume the disc is damaged and try a different one.

Thanks for the help.

It's not the physical disc, if MakeMKV was having problems reading from it then it would say so. Plus AACS provides hashes for the m2ts files... if the disc was dirty there's no way it could slip past MakeMKV.

Extract all the tracks using EAC3To, then remux them all using MKVMerge. See if that helps.

Or try re-encoding the audio, either upon ripping with MakeMKV or after using EAC3To.

Ok. Thanks. I will give that a go.

This was a complicated issue. It seems there is an AC3 track embedded in the TrueHD audio track, similar to what was described here ... https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php? ... ost1425368

Maybe that was the cause of the audio cutting in & out when using MakeMKV to create an MKV from the BD?

Anyways ... so I used AnotherEAC3toGUI to isolate the TrueHD track and saved it as a FLAC.

Then, using MKVToolNix GUI I multiplexed the video, subtitles and audio into an MKV.

Plays without error now in VLC.
