Immortal (2004) bluray backup failing with odd debug codes?

Post by mtrcycllvr »

Greetings!

I'm trying to backup "Immortal" from Bluray, but am getting odd debug errors that I don't THINK are related to media failures..

LOG looks like:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.10.6 darwin(x86-release) started
Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as /Users/etimberl/MakeMKV_log.txt
Optical drive "BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH16NS40 1.00d" opened in OS access mode.
Backing up disc into folder "/Volumes/Video/bluray/backup/IMMORTAL"
Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files.

The fact that the errors are identical suggests I'm not dealing with random SCSI errors, and indeed I successfully backed up another BR disk just a day ago. The second attempt was after removing and carefully inspecting and cleaning the disk surface.. I didn't note any obstruction that might cause a read error.

Any clue what might be going on here and how I might address this?

Thanks so much!!

With the backup function, an error in one file can cause it to fail.

If you instead click on the big Bluray button and Open the disk, do you see errors on specific titles? If you then Save the selected titles, do they all fail, or just some?

Thanks for the response - it turns out that the disk was "imperceptibly" dirty, AND that goofed up something - the OS, the driver - who knows..

The train of events was, "Hey, that's a weird DEBUG code I've never encountered before!", clean, try again, fail, TRY ANOTHER DISK, it fails too! Okay, I know the drill.. When you can't explain something, did you fucking reboot and power cycle everything?

That fixed the "Another disk", so BACK to Immortal, which THIS TIME, backed up, but with content hash errors.. Okay, at least we're READING the dang thing now...

Next day, check disk VERY CAREFULLY - can't see any dirt, but just in case, rub the hell out of it with a new micro-fiber cloth, and try one more time..

SUCCESS!

I had mistakenly interpreted "odd" DEBUG codes as perhaps some new encryption scheme that was flummoxing makemkv, but that does NOT appear to be the case!

Sorry to post so "early" before trying everything I knew..

And I never did see any dirt on the disk - huh..

Anyway, thanks again for your kind response, appreciate the time!

Sincerely,

-E-
