King Kong (2005) Blu-Ray Rip Failure (Solved)

Post by stalwartone »

I’ve attempted to rip my King Kong (2005) Blu-Ray disc several times, with two different drives from two different manufacturers, as well as using two different computers (Mac), with zero success. This is not my first rodeo, as I’ve been using MakeMKV for years with great success.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:
There are two versions of the movie - Theatrical, and Extended.
I’ve attempted to copy them both in one session. I’ve attempted to copy one at a time in separate sessions. I’ve done both with varying audio settings, during the day, night, rainy and dry days and nights, different moon phases, weekdays, weekends, holidays, etc..

I’ve done this with different discs (I’m on my third different disc). All discs were pristine, exceptionally clean (and yet, I cleaned them), and I’ve used “Read Retry Count” settings of 5 and 25. I’ve also made a decrypted backup of the disc, and attempted all of the above with no success.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Right now, debug logs would be more valuable than pictures of the screen. The FAQ in my signature will tell you how to turn it on and where to find the log once it is being recorded.

Most likely problem is a disk read error in one of the parts that is common to both cuts of the movie.

Got it. Made the change & reproduced the same result. Here’s the text:

Code: Select all

001002:0020 LIBMKV_TRACE: Exception: Error while reading input
Do you get this same error when using MakeMKV's Backup procedure?

No. Actually, I’ve figured it out. The issue was with the subtitles. Disable the subtitles, and rip it. It doesn’t appear to compromise the film in any way.

I kind of feel like a dolt, having not figured this out before posting. Oh well, no big deal.

Thank you for your help with this. Hopefully someone else is able to solve their potential issue with this.

I've seen that a few times, when there is an error in the disk at JUST the right place that disabling one track of a title makes it work. Sometimes it's an audio track, sometimes it's a subtitle.

Tried disabling subtitles but had no success. Never had another blu ray fail - strange. Going to rip my other blu rays and then maybe come back to King Kong later. I'll post an update if I am able to get it working!
