"Device is currently busy" on Total Recall

Post by dlaugh »

I'm consistently getting a this error in working on Total Recall blu-ray:

Error 'OS error - {Device Busy} The device is currently busy.' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00000.m2ts' at offset '17490505728'

I have some errors on other disks that I may post separately on, but in general things work well for me (I've gotten through ~100 disks so far, both regular DVD and blu-ray).

Any ideas?

Turn on debug in the preferences and post the whole log.

Hi!

Have you tried cleaning the original, comercial Blu-ray disc, shutting down your system and then rebooting (cold start)?

I have, unfortunately, yes.

I should add that this error appears to lock my drive entirely -- it will not work at all until reboot.

This looks like a physically damaged disc.

For the record, in case anyone comes here after searching for a similar error:

I was at Fry's and decided to look around to see if they had some uber-disc cleaning solution. Didn't find that, but I did find myself in the drive aisle and thought, well, a new blu-ray drive here is only $60, why not just get a second drive and see if that works?

It did. My new Samsung drive can read basically all the discs the LG drive choked on. Odd. The LG handled ~100 discs, but had problems on 3 or 4 of the type described in the posts above. The Samsung handled those without complaint. Problem solved, though not necessarily explained.

Thanks, all, for the suggestions.

One sign of a weakening/failing drive is inconsistent behavior - and that seems to be what you're experiencing.

I previously suggested cleaning the disc. Now I'd suggest that you might want to try running a cleaning disc on your older drive. Maxell makes one that sells for about $10US...

Just curious to know if you tried cleaning your older problematic drive and, if so, what the results were...

I have not, yet. And I may have misstated the age of the drive. The whole computer is only about 2 months old, including this blu-ray drive (which came with the computer). I may still clean it though. If I do I'll report back.

Yes, even if it's chronologically only a couple of months old, based on the number of discs it's processed, you probably should try cleaning it...
