Back to the Future (BD Disc 1 - Ultimate Trilogy)

Post by enthusiastdre »

I'm having an issue with ripping the Blu-Ray version of Back to the Future (Disc 1; part of the Ultimate Trilogy). However, the disc seems to play back just fine using VLC. The other discs rip worked correctly, as did the 4K UHD discs. Anyone know what the issue could be? Happy to provide any other pertinent details.

If you post some logs from MakeMKV of the failure then people can comment.

This is pure speculation, but it is 99% likely that you should clean the disc. I like using dish soap and water. Others like isopropyl alcohol. In any case, clean it, dry it with a microfiber towel, and try it again. Even if the disc looks perfect and is brand new and plays fine.

Some people in the Blu-ray.com forum have reported playback issues with these discs. I also had this problem here:
https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 275#p99275

That happened with parts I and II, and very likely part III as well. I strongly advise you to check ALL (and I really mean ALL) posts from the thread below, because this is either a problem created by Universal when producing these discs (so they are defective and they need to do a recall) or some issue related to the 4K/BD player being used:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.ph ... 3&page=294

I know this thread has waaaaaaay too many posts, however you need to check all pages for past reports of playback issues and find out if they say the same thing you may be experiencing.

A few interesting posts I found a few minutes ago, you will want to look at them first, before browsing that thread:

There's also a way to request a replacement with Universal, so be aware you may had bad luck and got a defective disc.

I actually did go through the blu-ray.com forum before posting here, and it looks like the issues are pretty scattered amongst the discs. I guess I can't really complain because the other discs have worked just fine -- just the BTTF BD.

Can you describe what the issue you are having was about?

The same I reported here?

Also, did you try not selecting the Atmos track?

Try selecting anything else, and leaving the Atmos out. If you are talking about the 1080p Blu-rays, then try leaving the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track out, and see how that works for you.

Sorry for the late response; I didn't have a chance to re-try the disc until today.

Here's something bizarre: I had originally tried this several times on three different computers using two different drives. All had failed with different error messages even after cleaning the disc with soap, limiting disc read rates, using different MakeMKV versions, etc. I tried it again just for kicks and it actually finished the rip without any issues. I hadn't made any changes to that particular drive or PC. I have no idea what made it work today.
