Weird color separation

Post by dangertim »

(I'm not very tech savvy, so I apologize in advance for inadequate terminology. Could use help though.)

I've been happily using this software for years without problem. Unfortunately within the last year or so, I've noticed some files have a weird color separation. Everything green has shifted upward, out of alignment with the rest of the frame. Has anyone else experienced this (and fixed it)?

It only seems to happen with some color widescreen Blu-ray files. DVDs or programs in 4:3 aspect ratio seem to still rip fine.

Thanks!

It isn't happening when those discs are played on any of my set-top players. Unfortunately, I don't have another Blu-ray drive to test.

Can you play it in VLC right on the computer and see the problem?

UPDATE: it wasn't a problem with MakeMKV or my drive. It was an issue with VLC Player. I had to change an output setting to correct the problem.

Thanks for everyone's help!

I have found this error occurs on rips of discs that utilize the older VC-1 or MPEG2 codecs only. The newer codecs (MPEG4) are not affected. These codecs were used on legacy (older) titles primarily from Warner Bros. and Universal and a few others. I have previously ripped discs using older versions of MKV with these codecs with no issues, but the latest versions of MKV, at least since version 1.15 (2020), seem to have this issue. It appears that the green color palette is shifted upward and not aligned with the rest of the colors (there is a green stripe visible in the top black border).
