Post your blu-ray drive and speeds with makekv

Post by BlackDragon24 »

Hey all

Wasn't sure if we had one of these and if we do please forgive me. I'd like to compile a list of Blu-ray drives and the speeds that are generally seen when using makemkv, so that we might all be able to make the best choices when it comes to purchasing our hardware.

I'll start:

Drive: Pioneer BDR-206 Internal SATA
Speed: Maximum mkv writing speed from blu-ray that I've seen with this drive is 4.1X, which works out to about 17 mb/s. Most BD's burn down at speed of 2.0X-3.0X.

Cheers

Plextor PX-B310U - External USB drive with own power supply.
Ripping speed between 2.0x and 5.0x (assuming the disc isn't damaged, I've seen it drop down to 0.8x).
Home Theater PC: Assassin HTPC, XBMCbuntu 12.0 (Frodo), Intel i5 3570k 3.4 GHz Ivy Bridge w/ HD 4000, LG BD-ROM
Playback Devices: Mede8er MED600X3D, MyGica EnjoyTV 120, Xtreamer SideWinder 3, Crystal Acoustics MediaMatchBox

Samsung SH-B123L (firmware SB04) internal SATA. It's rated 12x read and I max out at 6.1x from what I've seen. I'd say it averages around 5-5.5x.

LG BH10LS30, external USB enclosure (jMicron USB-SATA bridge), MakeMKV 1.6.10:

First result (stock firmware 1.00):
Max ripping speed: 12.2 Mb/s [2.8X]

After flashing the riplock-free 1.00 firmware:
Max ripping speed: 28 Mb/s [6X]

Averaged: 148 minute movie came off the disc in 30 minutes, yielding about 4X ripspeed in average.

Lite On IHBS112-29
Stock firmware

No Country For Old Men
122 minutes runtime
LPCM with English subtitles

Ripped in 18 minutes, 49 seconds [5.1x]

Max I recall seeing is spooling up to 7.4x before slowly settling around 6-something.

It generally rips blurays in 20 minutes (primary video track, DTS-MA/TrueHD/LPCM, English subtitles).

It's definitely is worth the upgrade for $99. I used an LG before and it was painfully slow.

Asus BC-12B1ST
1.0 Firmware
4-5X speeds on dual layer discs in the sweet spot
7-8X on single layer discs in the sweet spot

Max that I've seen is 9.2X.

Overall, a nice, nearly silent BD drive (and no AACS Bus Encryption)
