Heads up - Support for LG UHD drives

Post by mike admin »

As of today, MakeMKV does not support any of "official" UHD drives for reading UHD discs. From the day one, we promised that these drives will eventually be supported - this day is coming. It is planned that in about two weeks MakeMKV would support LG "official" UHD drives, namely WH16NS60 and BU50N. If you are in a market for a new drive, given the holiday shopping season is going on, you may as well buy a "real UHD" drive. All firmware versions will be supported. For some newer drives a firmware "upgrade" will be required. If the firmware upgrade would be needed, it could be done using official LG flasher - no need for DOS boot or "hacky" methods.

UPDATE: Several forum members asked for clarifications for "friendly" drives with "locked" firmware, namely ASUS with FW3.03 and LG drives with FW1.01 . These will be supported the same way as "real" UHD drives with FW 1.01 - either natively, or they might require a firmware "update" with official vendor flasher. They might be enabled a little bit later than "official" UHD drives.

The current option to downgrade the FW is always available, but please make sure you know what you are doing..

This is great news Mike. Thanks for all the hard work! Glad to see this feature will finally see daylight and I am sure many others will also be happy with this.

if you leave a disk in the current uhd friendly drives for 2 minutes it goes to sleep and after that when you try to read disk it wont read and makes horrible seeking noise

Isn't that a "feature" of this generation of drive? If that bug were to be fixed across the board it would be fantastic but I thought it was a firmware thing.

Brand new to the board - does this news mean that I shouldn't bother trying to downgrade my LG drive from FW 1.03 to an earlier version and just wait for MakeMKV to support the drive natively? I'm still new to the hobby and VERY much learning the ropes. Thanks guys!

As this will be new ground for MakeMKV. My suggestion is to get one of each if possible. Have a Friendly (downgraded) drive and a supported UHD Drive like the WH16NS60 as backup. May help you cover your all bases down the line.

I have a Mac, BU50N (firmware 1.01 I believe, I don't have it with me) and around 25 4K disks. If there are any beta testing opportunities for this feature/drive support, I'd be more than happy to help. :)

Will these UHD drives from LG require some specific firmware?

You sure about that? :-)

Ask me for a 4K “UHD Friendly” Blu Ray drive to try before you buy!
