In both cases you will have Dolby Vision working without any problems.
Sounds really good. Unfortunately I also believe this just "keeps" the dual layer Dolby Vision information which we cant use no matter what. We really really need dual to single layer conversion but that wont happen with official support. No chance....

That burning method is still sth. I would look into. Unfortunately no cheaper DV disc player can handle burned discs above 66gb. Any movie under 66gb might work ofc.

Edit: Just tried it, same shit. The converter might be the key, but it only keeps/recognizes the HDR10, not the DV :(
i used it after i used makemkv saved full disk then made iso..used DVDFab 10 it takes the iso and recopyed it into a smaller iso that fits on a dl BD disk and it did play Dolby vision on my sony uhd700

Yeah well thats the question. What happens to a 66gb+ movie that gets cut into a smaller 50gb version? Is the quality still the same with DV? I doubt it.

No he's talking about remuxing, I think. I've used DVDFab 10 to remux Pacific Rim 2 while keeping full DV. It works and it's currently the only app that can remux dual layer DV. PR2 went from full disc @90GB to DV remux @71GB. Still too big for this particular 66GB limit which is strange but UHD burning specs haven't been completed yet. Someone will figure out the Dual layer DV to single layer DV it will just take time. This is why I spent the money upfront to make sure every piece of HW I did for this upgrade had working DV before purchase. Was a wise move. Expensive, but wise.

Why wise I am not sure we will ever see dual to single layer conversion. So far nothing absolutely nothing no hints absolutely nothing and Dolby will probably NEVER sell licences to multimediaplayers or PowerDVD for PC or anything. Therefore I doubt we will see it, ever.

Hi everyone, I've got a few UHD discs now but I'm looking to buy the Asus BW16D1H and an Oppo 203 player. My understanding is that I will be able to make UHD rips with Dolby Vision using DVDfab. Will I be able to play these on the Oppo (over the network) even on rips that contain Cinavia?

If you haven’t noticed, this is the MAKEMKV software support forum. NOT the DVDFab software support forum. DVDFab has their own site/support forum. May be more helpful to you if you ask your question there.

Well, we're not getting one. It's a closed, proprietary format and no way to store it in MKV. So, unless you've got a magic wand, the only way is with a licensed player and a disc.

I remember a time when the stories told by movies were compelling enough that our imaginations filled in the missing details.

Nowadays, only a few people can tell compelling stories, and many people either don't know how to use their imaginations, or are too bored with the story to look past the minor imperfections.

(Says the guy who sat in the front row to watch Apocalypse Now in its theatrical release...)

Dolby might be lessening their restrictions on requiring specific hardware to decode their proprietary HDR. This should pave the way for media players based on the Nvidia Shield Tv, Apple Tv, and others to merge the video tracks into the proper format for presentation.

This article is dated Feb 2017, so it's old news by now, but it's about all we've got to go on.

Is it now possible for MKV to have the DV-layer? I can't seem to find any information on the Internet regarding this, I'm no expert though. I have the file and when selecting the second video track the video just stays black in MPC-HC with madVR, just like with the UHD-BD ts-files.

No. That is the HDR10 metadata. It’s clearly telling you what type of metadata it's using by labeling it “Commercial name : HDR10”. It can’t get any clearer than that.

Attempting to “play” that stream will get you nowhere. It’s not an actual standalone video stream.

Yup, HDR10 not Dolby Vision. Things are about to get a bit more fun with the introduction of HDR10+. That should be an open format with dynamic metadata similar to DV. No idea if it'll be possible to shove that into an MKV container. The first titles with HDR10+ should be hitting the streets in the next few weeks. Let the games begin! LOL
