Re: UHD drives
I've got WH16NS60s for days, BU50s and BU40s as well.archermoo wrote: ↑Tue Jan 08, 2019 1:42 pmI'm looking to get an "official" UHD drive. I can get an LG BU40N drive here from Amazon UK, and an enclosure to put it in. Or I can buy a BU50N from the US and have it shipped over. Is there any reason (functionality of MakeMKV-wise) to get the BU50N over the BU40N? I haven't been able to find the WH16NS60 (or BH16NS60) at all.

Re: UHD drives
@jonghotti,
I sent you a pm about 3 days ago and haven't heard back from you. I would like a price for an official WH16NS60 (with stock firmware 1.00) sent to Victoria, Australia.
Can you please advise.
Thanks

So if for some reason it has a bad version of the firmware.. how easy is it to flash it back to 1.02?MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Tue Jan 08, 2019 2:46 amThe most available drive for us Ozzie's is the LG BH16NS55, which works perfectly for UHD (on firmware 1.02) and is generally cheaper than the ASUS and is available at most PC Parts shops.
I'm in VIC and have 2 of these drives. 1 is on LG firmware 1.02 and the other I cross-flashed to ASUS 3.02.
Good luck..
As long as you can switch your PC to IDE mode in the BIOS, the DOS method is pretty easy to do.

Re: UHD drives
Big thanks to Alex (jonghotti) for sending me a flashed Asus drive to Australia (Brisbane). Works well and is a heck of a lot faster than my old Asus BR drive for ripping.
I'm still messing around with UHD content as a beginner; my projector is 1080p, my oppo UDP-203 can play UHD (disc or network) and I'm pretty certain my Marantz AV8801 pre-pro passes 4k imaging just fine. My Popcorn hour A400 doesn't present the image though when I rip the UHD version of a movie with MakeMKV.
I'll have to stick with the BR versions for now but I have the capability I wanted now for when I get a 4k display (deciding on a replacement projector or getting an 80" + TV given the image fidelity of new displays.

Re: UHD drives
Just an FYI. Had planned on downgrading some drives myself. But for me it was just easier to source from the regular sellers here on the forum. Both techman21 and jonghotti were solid for me. Had an ASUS BW-16D1HT I had purchased myslef that techman21 downgraded for me to 3.01. He was prompt, responded to all questions. Drive has worked great so far. Alex (jonghotti) was cool as well. He hooked me up with an LG UH12NS40 (a more budget option) crossed flashed to ASUS. Also a LG WH16NS40. Both have been good thus far.

Re: UHD drives
My motherboard doesn't have IDE, so I may need a flash service. Any ideas for a flash service or a way to force IDE on a motherboard that doesn't support it?
